World Class Scrabble players set to take Bangkok by storm next week

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Senior Scrabble players will be converging on Bangkok next week to take part in the world championship in the Thai capital.

 

Players from Europe, Australia and Asia will be in the city for the 4th World Seniors Scrabble Championship that starts on Wednesday. Scrabble is the world’ most popular word game and is played by millions.

 

A new player is expected to be crowned champion as Howard Warner from New Zealand is unable to defend his crown he won here last year.

 

Organiser Karen Richards from Australia announced that the annual event first held in Bangkok in 2013 and repeated in Sri Lanka in 2014 and here again last year is open to 55 year olds and up born on or before 31st December 1961.

 

Competitors will be playing a total of 20 games using the international Collins dictionary that combines words from the US and other sources. That means a whopping 250,000 words to choose from.

 

The event will be held in the public areas at the Central Bang Na shopping complex in Bang Na eastern Bangkok. It is being organized in conjunction with the Thailand Crossword Game Association and spectators are always welcome.

 

Bangkok is recognized throughout the world as one of the best places to play competitive Scrabble and has been called “the home of Scrabble” because of its world class events and the number of high level participants living in the city.

 

Main contenders in the senior event will be David Webb from the UK who was among the leading contenders at the World Championship in Lille, France in September. Others sure to give him a run for his money will be Bangkok resident Gerry Carter and Sanjoy Gupta from India as well as veteran Tony Sim from Singapore. Karen Richards, who won a side event in Lille, also adds to the high quality field of oldies.

 

The seniors’ event will be followed by the royally sponsored Princess Cup at the same venue that starts on Friday when world number one Nigel Richards will attempt to wrest back the crown from Thai ace and former world champion Panupol Sajjayakorn who won last year. There is also an international youth tournament where dozens of Thai players will battle it out against foreign opposition.

 

Seniors residents in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand who wish to take part in the World Championship can contact Karen at [email protected].

 

Entry fee is US$ 100 and the top prize is expected to be $1,000. Just so long as you are 55 or over and know a few words of course!

Make sure they understand that they should not leave any money even change on the table. 

I'm confused by the topic. Isn't the monsoon season over?

I am happy they are playing scrabble and not using universally accepted playing cards!

 

Or have Thai "authorities" not yet understood the "insidious" use of tablets for gaming?  

If they play in Pattaya afterwards, they will be arrested for gambling, just like the domino players, and the group of retirees who were playing  bridge.

Just need to re write the lyrics :)

Moses brought the "tablets" down from the mountains only to find golden images and gambling. Not much has changed since then.

I once won a highly charged game of scrabble that lasted over three hours with the word 'buttocks'.  I kid you not.
