BANGKOK: -- Residents in northern Bangkok are bracing for the mother of all traffic headaches as the flyover at Ratchayothin intersection is pulled down this week.

The authorities have announced five alternative routes to try to mitigate the effect of losing a major bridge, reports tnamcot.

But many of these are already in narrow, overcrowded sois in the area.

Frustrations and delays are bound to cause headaches to local residents and people trying to get through the area.

The flyover is being removed to make way for the Green Line skytrain running from Mor Chit towards Rangsit. The removal will take two months.

A tunnel is being constructed for Rachadaphisek traffic instead of the flyover. This is expected to take two years.

The flyover is being removed from 1am Saturday morning. Before then there are closures to the flyover to prepare for the work:

November 22-23: 10am to 3pm

November 24-25: 8am to 5pm.

The following five routes have been suggested to avoid the Ratchayothin intersection:

1. Pahonyothin Soi 21 through to and out of Viphawadee 30

2. Pahonyothin Soi 23 to Viphawadee 32

3. Rachada 46 to Pahonyothin 33

4. Rachada 48 and Rachada 46/1 to Pahonyothin 35.

5. Pahonyothin 30 to Rachad 30,32,36,42 and 44.

Many of the above sois are jammed packed with traffic in the rush hours already so it may be advisable to avoid the area altogether.

admission that all the alternative routes identified by the authorities are rubbish and useless. traffic along phahonyothin was bad enough even before the kaset flyover was demolished. before today, traffic at hthe ratchayothin junction is always jammed even close to midnight. now with the ratchayothin flyover closed, we can expect traffic around that area 7-11 style.

My suggestion move out of Bangkok you could not pay me to live there. Traffic is bad but then there is the Sodom and Gomorrah lifestyle. Pass the salt.

i agree. dont know why expats would choose bangers over pattaya, hua hin or the islands. i have to go pick up a passport there next week. i am dreading going already.

Steel yourself laddie. Have a wee dram of the good stuff but don't drink and drive. If you drive your chances are about 95% that you will make it there and back.

Distinct lack of planning evident for this project !

Perhaps the tunnel should have been completed first ?

TIT !

I'm no engineer but I would guess it's just not feasible.

Maybe you didn't know, but Thais are great tunnel builders.
