Ubon Hotel Recommendations

My wife's grandfather is dying and he asked my wife to bring all three of the kids up to see him. I think there is some land gifting going on.  I have never been to Ubon so I was wondering if anyone might be able to suggest a hotel near to a western food source?  We will be there for the weekend.  Driving over from Khon Kaen in the morning.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Probably 12 hours too late for you, but for the benefit of anyone else subsequently researching I have stayed in over 20 Ubon hotels in the last 4 years and make a point of "assessing" them for the benefit of travelers. This selection is tailored for those wanting a central location close to western food.

If you want to get budget accommodation without breakfast included, then Pandinthong Apartments (400-450baht), Phadeang Mansion (500 baht) or T3 House (for a little more boutique style at 650 baht) meet your 'close-to-western food' requirements .

  • Pandinthong is quite basic and windowless but has big king size rooms and is clean/comfortable. Hot water is provided at reception to use free coffee sachets for breakfast. 400 baht is the phone-in or walk in price. 450 baht on Agoda/Booking.com. No English spoken
  • Phadaeng Mansion is Ubon's high value option by which I judge all others; also clean king size rooms with a decent balcony, good TV and, although it does not have free full breakfast it does have free instant coffee, Chinese donuts (if you are not too late) and maybe some bananas in the lobby. Reasonable English. Just noticed that this one is now listed on Booking.com for the first time; shame, that will ultimately make it less accessible at short notice to us cognoscenti!
  • T3 House is similar to Phadaeng but with a bit more boutique like style and good staff. Free coffee only for breakfast but it does have a basic cafe with reasonably priced dishes. I tend to prefer it when with my family, whereas Phadaeng id staying alone. Reasonable English.
  • All three of these are within walking distance of Wrong Way Cafe (falang bar on Phadaeng Road) and Peppers (international food - great choice of western breakfasts) on Upalisan Road between its junctions with Chayangkhun Rd (Ubon's main drag) and with Phadaeng Road

Curiously there are no full breakfast (by which I mean a breakfast buffet with a range of choices in the same central area as the above three) places in the same very central area. All the other places you might stay within spitting distance of this area, like Chatsuree Mansion, Tokyo Hotel and Bua Boutique Hotel are also accommodation only places.

You have to stay around the increasingly alternative centres of the East side of Chayangkhun near the Big C Plaza shopping/food/entertainment area or within walking distance of Chaeng Sanit Road which is a short taxi ride to the Big C Plaza and has Spagos Italian Reatuarant/Pizzeria within walking distance to get full breakfast inclusive places close to a range of western food. Those fitting into that category and with buffet breakfast included are (in order of my personal preference) - Bliss Hotel (best breakfast in this class), De Proud (great but no English spoken), Rapeepan Ville and V-Hotel. Prices tend to bounce around between 800-950 baht so unless you want to hoof through all the details of what are the good points and disappointing points of each (see attached spreadsheet - very anal) you could just go for the cheapest on the day - they are all very good and high value IMO. As back-ups Zara Doubletree and Rich Hotel are not bad either. Penta-Hug has boards for beds (worst in Ubon) but is otherwise good too.

Outside Inn is great but it is not as central. I love it for its great restaurant (Tex-Mex, American and Thai), the ambience of its garden suburban setting, the TV for sport - only place in Ubon to have full True Visions package for European and American versions of football etc if you book one of their premium rooms at about 800 baht. Americans feel right at home (great American-Thai couple running it and outstanding staff generally) as do other real travelers with its slightly backpacker feel. But you need a taxi (cheap and highly efficient call-up service in Ubon) or bicycle (latter are available at OU) to get around.

Many falangs stay with their other half at Sunnee Plaza in a rather remote middle part of Chayangkhun Rd (though it does have it's own small Mall). True it is good value at 1500 baht for a 4 star business full service hotel. I have a down on it at the moment as the rooms they give to Agoda/Booking.com bookers seem to be a bit run down and have really $hite TVs. Their staff could not have cared less when I pointed out you can get better viewing in 500 baht hotels down the road. Also I don't need to pay to impress my other half!

Other hotels worth a mention that would suit someone with transport or willing to use taxis are Eco Inn (500 baht), A+ Hotel 500 baht, Laithong (there deluxe rooms at 1250 baht and great outstanding breakfast buffet places it above Sunnee in my book) and Huay Muang Apartments (450 baht)

No doubt you are in Outside Inn by now. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. To others who contemplate coming to Ubon there is a really great range of value decent large roomed clean and comfortable places in this town. More so than in any other town I know in Thailand.

Cannot guarantee that the fine detail still holds for all hotels and there is no accounting for individual taste, but I have broadly rechecked prices against Booking.com. I have no allegiances with any hotel or the travel industry.
