What is a Livebox Wi-Fi multimedia router?

Is it just a normal ADSL router?

It's a proprietary ADSL modem/router/wifi/IPTV/IPPhone box developed by Orange (formally known as France Telecom) and widely used by them in countries which have Orange service (ie Europe).

 

It does what a normal modem/router does, but can also provide their proprietary IPTV/IPhone services which are not available without using their box and having a suitable subscription.

 

If you have the necessary login codes you can use a Livebox as a regular ADSL modem/router with other ISPs, and you can use another modem/router with Orange ADSL. But in neither case will you get the extra services the Livebox can provide.
