I bought a case of Leo beer from a big supermarket about 2 weeks ago. Opened the case case today to find the case infested with little white termites, at least a hundred. I've bought many cases of beer in the past 2 years, usually 1 per month, but this is only the second case that has had termite infestation. Do you think the termites were in the case at the time purchase or are they resident somewhere else in my condo and then traveled to the cardboard? There is no wood in the kitchen. Anybody else find termites in the cardboard beer cases?

Moved for - hopefully - constructive replies. At a loss to think of a suitable Forum.

As an aside - cardboard is made from wood - may have some bearing.

Check the date that the beer was produced. The date is stamped on the top of the box and on each bottle label. If the date is recent then probably from your home. If an old date maybe from else where. When you buy the beer check for little pin holes in the box. If there is this will be an indication of an infestation.

Termites also like plasterboards card sleeve, seen this in an 18th floor  condo so check your ceilings, also door frames and doors , you can only guess where the box has been stored previously but id check round my condo if I were you

If the termites came from your home you would likely see their tunnels (mud tubes) leading from where they came to where they were found. Or, if they were the flying variety, you would see lots of discarded wings around (wings drop off when they land and find a place to start a new infestation.

So, if there are no tunnels leading to or from the box, and no discarded wings around, it is likely they were already in the box when you brought it home.

I think the OP would probably already know if he had termites elsewhere in his condo. So I suspect that this box was stored near the floor in some warehouse prior to being bought and the termites got into it there. Like weevils in rice.

Thanks! No tunnels or mud tubes and no wings near the box.
