Just come down and look for yourself, for example a week or two and move around in different areas, that's much better than asking...

wasnt too bad 10 years ago but went back 1  month ago and didnt like it, overdeveloped.

Yip !! Have been here 9 years and now want to leave. Overdeveloped everywhere with ugly buildings, not enough water , electric etc for them, garbage problems , traffic now a nightmare in certain areas during most of the day , people trying to rip you off for just about everything even if you can speak Thai to discuss prices , restaurant prices more than Michelin star restaurants in Europe for average food , people who think they own the place and every street and those who actually do and not forgetting criminals here hiding from the police !!

Im heading to the middle of nowhere as soon as i sell my properties in a flooded property market !!

Look at the flooding there recently.....also I think there is a trash problem on the island

Post 3 and 4 pretty well cover it. I would get street fishing is popular there. Is the trash problem due to the incinerator breaking down??

Do you mean literally flooded or a over supply? Both I would presume are putting pressure on selling

Over supply. There has been a few large companies came in and started building 10-20 houses at a time and selling them out cheap before one even completed. It is far cheaper and easier to get materials now than 10 years ago , hence 3 bedrooms villas for 6m bht instead of 10-12m bht. all have service charges and some are insanely high just in first year alone. But buyers dont really think about them as much to start until they go up every year !

People are knocking 10-20 million off the prices of some places and others are selling 3-4m under what it cost them to buy a 10m bht villa just to get out of here.

Sounds like the breaking point has been reached.

Me or the property market ??:w00t:

Building still going on like crazy, condos everywhere. Think they have a time limit to complete the builds once the permit has been given !

Both I would say. We seem to be living in a world of useful idiots. Marching on to oblivion.

Why not go and look around for a week or so?   You can do it on the way to visiting other nearby spots in the southern region.

it absolutely depends what you want. There are more farangs living on Samui than ever. More and more young farang families as well as more and more old farangs added to the usual.

There must be a reason for that. Maybe because Samui is the most comfortable tropical island in Thailand. There is everything.  Also that old tropical island feeling on many places.

People, who complain, know Koh Samui only from their very small angle of narrow perspective. Best thing to come here and look for yourself.

And those of us who feel it's the closest one can come to Paradise in this life, we don't advertise, we just say, come on and check it our for yourself – perhaps there is a reason for ranters, perhaps not...:whistling:

When I came here first time some 15-years ago, some folks talked about leaving, because Samui was no longer what in once were – sure, when taking a long-tail boat with some chicks to a desert-beach on a neighboring island to see the full moon rise over the water, make bonfires and play guitars. and get eaten by sand-flies – that happy hippie-days had long gone.

Five years later, when I settled at Samui, folks talked about moving out, because Samui was not what it once were – too many concrete roads, even the road over the lake to Raggae Pub now concrete, and not the usual mud, so too many people coming – and so on; however, these folks arrived after the happy hippies.

And now folks says, Samui is not what it was 9 years ago – no it has changed, also while I've been here – but it's depending what you expect; in my horizon it has changed to the better, much better when one is living here.

What about flooding in Hua Hin, and traffic in Pattaya, or smog in Chiang Mai, and so on. How did I find out..? I checked it myself, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Isaan and even Pattaya, before I decided to settle here, in "Paradise", which was last choice, and I only came because my friends "dragged" me down to this insignificant island. Others love the places I finally decided that were not the right ones for me, we can find bad things about all destinations if we so wish, we all have different preferences. Therefore, only you can judge, what is right for you, so just come down here a week or two, and check out yourself if you are missing something or not – at least, then you know for sure...

Come over for a couple of weeks and look for your self.  I live here now for 8 years and still like it. Enough quietly beaches for example Maenam and Ban Por. When I go for a walk on the beaches from Chaweng or Lamai (the busy part) in the low season they are also quiet. About always flooded, in 8 years maybe 3 times. The heavy rain started on Friday evening and stopped Tuesday evening. On wednesday almost all streets where free of water. Garbage problem, where their is no problem with Garbage in Thailand.  We live 1 km from the main road in Maenam when  I go out for a ride on my by bicycle I see hardly anybody. High-rise buildings are not allowed on Samui, so the beaches look like beaches. But for some people  Pattaya or Huahin is much better.

almost every tourist place in thailand has been named a dump, especially pattaya, but tenthousands of expats have chosen it to live exactly there, and they love it. i love 2 weeks holidays at  deserted beaches, ko kut for example, with thousands of palmtrees, no traffic, wonderful waterfalls and nothing else, but i would never want to live there all the time. experience samui for yourself, at least 6 months, before you finally move there, everybody has different interests.

Do not listen to a couple of wingers - look for yourself and I suggest that you do not live in or near Chaweng. That is not Samui.

16 years here so far and still a smile on my face every day.

A bad day on Samui is still better than a good day in the UK.
