Driver's license

Featured Replies

There is this law in Canada that if you don't renew your license for 2 years, you have to pass the test again.

Since I have been living in Thailand for 3 years it seems like I am now unable to get an international license and subsequently a Thai license.

My question is as a foreigner who is married to a Thai, can I just go to Thai driving school, pass a test and get a Thai driver's license.

Or is there some other way?

Foreigner or Thai, you get Thai driver license from the Motor Vehicle Dept. There is a written test, vision  and a driving test, both actually much like typical USA driver license process. You get 1 year temporary license which is actually a real one in all aspects, then can get the 5-year license with no additional test.

The temp licence is 2 years now.

Of course you can go through the process of getting a Thai DL at the Department of Land Transport (DLT) as roughly described in post #2.

Driving schools are a rare occurrence and I don't know how much they can help with the process.

For details or other members experience you should tell where you live (region).

Main bureaucratic hurdle is usually a proof of residence that is accepted at the DLT.
