A gun attack on Reina nightclub in Istanbul has left at least 35 people dead and more than 40 people wounded, according to the city’s governor. Ten people are said to be in a serious condition.

Foreign nationals are reported to be among the dead.

Vasip Şahin has labelled the shooting a terrorist attack, which he says involved a single shooter. However, local media reports on the number of attackers vary.

Some 500-600 people are thought to have been inside, celebrating the new year.

Wielding Kalashnikovs, the attacker/s reportedly opened fire on police outside the club, before entering the venue and shooting at random.

Police, special forces and explosives experts are carrying out a search of the building, according to NTV.

Initial reports suggest the shooter was wearing a Santa Claus costume. Eyewitnesses claim the attacker was speaking Arabic.

Television footage shows ambulances and police vehicles outside the venue in the Ortaköy district of the city.

Reina lies on the European side of the Bosphorus Strait, which splits Istanbul in two. Some partygoers had jumped into the river to escape the gunfire, NTV reports, and police were rescuing them.

RIP to the victims and condolences to the friends and families of those killed.   I hope for a speedy recovery to those injured.

Plus the swift arrest of the killer/s. Terribly for 2017, security agencies around the world are forecasting an increase in the tempo of Islamist terror attacks upon civilians.

Lets hope 2017 with our new leaders will be the year that authorities worldwide start to tackle the cause of all this mayhem. Photos of cities around the world with tens of thousands of police, concrete bollards, security scans etc are a dire reminder that we can not keep letting this escalate. The very ideology behind these attacks must be discredited by fellow followers, the age of silent complicity is hopefully over. RIP to the victims of another senseless(although wholly predictable) attack.

Exactly , the silence from the "fellow followers" is truly a topic that should be on the agenda every time these atrocities occur!

Muslim leaders, among others, have already condemned the OP mass murder, as they do in other Islamic terror killings. E,g. the Tunisians after the murders in Berlin etc etc

Pakistan has condemned in "strongest possible" terms the heinous terrorist attack at a night club in Istanbul. "We are deeply anguished as terror and tragedy have struck brotherly Turkey again," Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday. "We reaffirm our strong and unwavering solidarity with the Government and people of Turkey in its resolute fight against terrorism and reiterate our belief that such heinous acts aimed at undermining Turkey's peace, stability, progress and internal harmony would never succeed," the statement added.

I'm with you on the fact that official goverment spokepersons condemn acts like this, but I'm not so sure about the local Imams in the neighbourhood mosques...

Not a fan of Trump, but at least I feel he will stop arming, training and funding these terrorists. And instead work with Russia to wipe them out.

you would hope so….unless they continue to support them covertly, without his approval.

Heinous as this may sound, I would like to see guys like this, and his buddy who is still at large, apprehended by a bunch of civilians, and his fate is in the hands of the mob.  In the end he'll look more like a pile of hamburger meat than a human corpse.  Let his fundamentalist brothers watch the video of how it came to be.  Like Quadafi.

A few weeks ago a suicide car was intercepted in Iraq, and the driver was killed before he could detonate.  One of the fighters who stopped him said to the corpse "are you happy now?"

Apparently this was a banner in Istanbul a few days ago, before the attack:
