BANGKOK: -- It has been revealed that a man at the center of cheating in police exams took up to 400,000 baht a head to help people con their way into the metropolitan police.

Jeeraphot Plaiduang, 45, who is a municipal official in Pathumwan district of Bangkok arrived with his lawyer to give himself up to Pahonyothin police investigating the scandal, reports Sanook.

On hand to interview Jeeraphot were met chief Sanit Mahathavorn and Adul Narongsak another high ranking officer.

Jeeraphot admitted that he had connived online to organize seating so that all the candidates who were to cheat were sitting together. He said he had told hopeful candidates for the force over a one year period that he was a public official with connections in the force’s education department. He said he knew lots of people such as advisors who were close to the setting of the exams.

He said he acted alone, an idea that top brass are suggesting may be just cover for protecting others involved in the case.

Jeeraphot said that he took between 300,000 and 400,000 baht from each person cheating to enter the force.

He has been charged with racketeering, computer crime and deception.

Sanit said that the suspect would be interviewed again to see if he was connected not just with the cheating in the metropolitan police exams but those involving Region 7 as well.

Sanit said he believes that many others are involved in the scandal. Twelve suspects who are believed to be involved in taking bribes have so far been interviewed and 50 candidates who took the exam have been questioned so far.

Earlier in the week it was suggested that more than 400 people had either cheated or connived to help cheating in the exams.

well if there was ever a case for the current administration to investigate and expose this is it

Prayuth - are you serious about your fight against corruption - then either (deleted) or get off the pot

This man claims he was providing seating arrangements for candidates and was acting alone - really ? 400k baht for a window seat ? what about the cheating

I am 100% sure this is the first year this has happened and it is a lone wolf act and that 400K per head was definitely not to be shared around other echelons of the RTP.

I am also 100% sure similar cheating certainly does not happen in other civil bodies.....

The headline alone tells the story.  Starting police are paid what?  8000 per month, from which they must buy their own uniforms, weapons, etc.?  But somehow that 8000 baht per month job is worth a 400,000 baht bribe to land the job.  Yea, right--no corruption here.

This is only a tip of the problem of corruption.  Cheating on exams is a small step.  Sadly the whole organization is a system of pay this...pay that to someone.  Even a transfer cost.  So..there is no reason to be shocked, it is what it is.  In fact...it's actually "too big to fail" or too big to take down.

This  cheating in Police Exams here is an "annual event" and it amazes me that the Authorities administering these exams do not fix the problem ?

Every year they loose more face.

The reason they don't fix it is probably quite a simply explanation which revolves around the 400K per head. There a quite a few mouths to feed.

This is fun....

A Thai friend wanted to borrow 400000 from me and my wife so his son could get into police academy...
(We said NO)

And nice to see some progress against corruption...

That's one small step for Thai police, one giant leap for Thai mankind .

Now only 999 999 more steps to go...But better than nothing..

And you wonder, where all the TRUE criminals come from, and why vicious people get in and shortly drop out of jail several times despite their clear criminal records,.... in the land of greedy smiles........

Before this came out it was common knowledge that 400k was the price of admittance here in the Phetchaburi district. Just a coincidence? I doubt it. Looks a lot like this guy is willingly taking the heat and will be handsomely rewarded by those who avoid the necessary scrutiny. Can't imagine strong interrogation on his claims.

Might be time for the MP to take over the RTP.  Not to administer military law but to administer Thai law.

This stooge had to have help there are just too many moving parts for this wot work by one person.

Send everyone involved to a different post in the north.

New chain of command military colonel in charge of each precinct. reports to a general who reports to a general who reports to THE GENERAL.

Any corruption in their area costs them their pension.

Our lad just started on 18,000bht a month. His uniform is provided and so is a "basic" weapon for free. The Government monetary loan system that goes with the job are amazing plus FREE healthcare for him, mum and dad and any family he may have in the future.

That is why folk want their kids to get in the force, salary for life and a pension.

Oddly enough in many countries where real pay is extremely low for people we depend on at times for life and death situations corruption is accepted as a way too give more public money to people who are theoretically receiving the actual public service.   We are effectively being taxed (under the table) for breaking the law in some minor way to off set pay for people who can not live on what they get officially.  In Albania, when I drove Albanian friends they had no problem with police stops at lunchtime (for lunch money) as we approached each village.  Why?  Because my friends knew the police were paid, just as Thai police are paid, so little that they deserve (in the minds of the common people) what is effectively considered a reasonable tip.  If the minor corruption is eliminated no one will agree to be a policeman.  Raise the pay and the big corruption can be attacked successfully.   But if the police pay is raised all other workers will clamor for more too.  These are some of the complexities people don't understand when there is demand to just stop corruption as if it can be done by fiat.
