The first day of change of traffic pattern at the notorious Ratchayothin Intersection created a chaos Tuesday morning that also resulted in gridlock on several adjacent roads, traffic radio station Jor Sor 100 reported.

The traffic flow at the intersection was changed to be a circle flow requiring all vehicles to make a circle from the left side instead of going straight. The change was implemented following the start of constructions of an elevated railway and an underground pass at the same time. Traffic police plan to implement the circle-pattern of traffic flow for four months.

Traffic chaos at Phaholyothin intersection as tunnel construction begins

BANGKOK: -- Traffic in Bangkok turned chaos with very heavy congestions on many roads after traffic police rearranged traffic at Ratchayothin intersection to facilitate the construction of a tunnel at the intersection.

Constructionn of the tunnel will begin 20.00 pm tonight with traffic roundabout in force for four months or until end of May.

The tunnel will replace the Ratchayothin flyover which was demolished to pave the way for the construction of the 19-kilometres long Green Line sky train extension from Morchit to Saphan Mai and Khu Khod.

Traffic roundabout was introduced at the Ratchayothin intersection for the first day today, causing confusion among motorists using the intersection who are not aware of the traffic change.

Affected by the traffic change are Phahon Yothin road from Bang Khen circle to the Kasetsat intersection and from  Sena Nikhom to Ratchayothin. Traffic here was reported to move at snail pace since 6.30am, and Ratchadapisek road from Thian Ruammit intersection to Asoke Montri road was also very congested.

That's my old neighborhood. Glad I no longer have to navigate that mess. That area was bad even at the best of times.

This is going to be fun!! Thai drivers negotiating a roundabout!

I don't believe Thais know how to negotiate roundabouts. Instead of giving way to those on the roundabout the Thai 'me first' syndrome kicks in and all traffic comes to a stop.

And now they've removed the roundabout in order to speed up traffic flow. Says a lot about how Thais negotiate roundabouts!

Put in a roundabout and they will be like clowns in a circus...
