Lock him up and throw away the key! Sorry, Just going along with what many posters here say when a foreigner commits a crime.

Seriously though, what on earth made him think he could just take the painting for himself?

Very silly for a Thai government official to steal in another country. Nothing surer than he will get caught and punished.

Much better for government officials to steal (under the table) within Thailand where there is almost no chance of getting caught.

Japan probably just deported the thief and blacklisted him from returning.  Now Thailand says they will investigate the situation upon his retun. A transfer to another ministry, a inactive post, or some other position where past criminal activity is not really considered in determining the value of a persons contribution to the honest part of society.

The consensus of opinion in my office (all Thai staff) is that he will not be punished upon his return -too well connected. Business as usual.

Gave you a like for the pragmatic outlook.

We can't he do like any other above the law official and steal inside Thailand?  Not good enough for him?

Forgot he wasnt in Thailand and couldnt just take what he wants.

Which brings the point - how did he ever get selected for the specific position he holds, and at a senior level?

Actions like these speak volumes of senior Thai officialdom, over entitled putz.

Also, highly unintelligent putz.
