Planning a trip during Songkran, Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.

Do I need to book accommodation ahead or just walk in same day?

Sure

Many places will be fully booked. And prices will be higher. Best to book ahead. 

Will get busy but it never sells out at Songkran. Never hurts to book ahead, you will get better rates on some sites than you'll get with a walk in rate.

Book now alot of the guest houses and hotels have been full since xmas, and songram will not be any different. The hotel my wife works at turns away non planners everyday

And for the time around Songkran, because that is the only time my girlfriend and me have a long holiday because we are both busy.
Next time if you don't have to contribute something helpful, better be quiet.
