BANGKOK: -- Minivan operators have been told that repeat infractions will no longer be tolerated.

Following a ministerial level meeting Tuesday presided over by deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan it was decided to revoke licenses for anyone repeating an offence, reported Thairath.

In addition all vans must be fitted with GPS systems before the Songkran holidays in April.

Spokeswoman Yingpornchanok Amphan said that there would be do exceptions. Vans that were not fitted with GPS and ready for service in April would not be allowed on the roads at all.

The regulations apply to 154 routes to the provinces from Bangkok.

Promises have also been made to review and improve the parking area for the vans near the Mor Chit Bus Station in the north of the city.

Tell that to the one that undertook me on the left last week, cut right in front of me after that, and weaved in and out of traffic all through Pattaya.

Terrible drivers.

I will believe it when I see it. So many pronouncement have been made by this toothless administration. Then, a week later they are forgotten. Follow up is not exactly Little P's strong suit.

I am hopeful. But, I do not expect much. Traffic safety is just not something they care about, since most of the fatalities happen to either the masses or foreigners. Two groups this government does not care about.

Great move and good to see this is actually moving forward.  However, why is this only for Bangkok.  Let's make it the whole of Thailand, especially the tourist areas such as Phuket.  These guys are a danger every time the get behind the wheel.

The on;y way to stop all the carnage is a ZERO tolerance on these morons that operate the minivans.

But this is Thailand, so that will never happen as too much dash money is involved .

The good news is the focus on the OPERATORS. I read posts about getting rid of mini vans in 6 months and replacing them with Micro Buses. What is so evil about Mini Vans? Nothing. Its the people.

People Drive too fast.

People drive dangerously.

People drive too many hours.

People accept too many passengers for the size of the vehicle.

People fall asleep at the wheel.

People take drugs to stay awake.

People fail to repair dangerous faults.

People fail to enforce the road traffic rules (Police, governing bodies).

People accept bribes to look the other way.

Mini vans are not the problem. Its the people that need to be changed.

There has been so much talk and so little real action. Even the new regulations about GPS won't make a bit of difference without enforcement (people) and elimination of the good old brown paper bag (people).
