PHUKET, 10 February 2017 (NNT) – The Region 4 Army has dispatched personnel to oversee the organization of rental vehicles and retail spaces along Patong Beach of Phuket province.

Deputy Commander of the Region 4 Army Maj Gen Pornsak Poonsawad has led a combined force of army and navy personnel to assist local administrators and police in Phuket province with promoting revamped regulations for orderliness along the province’s popular Patong Beach.

Maj Gen Pornsak said the combined force would spend the initial phase of its work assessing the efficacy of organizational measures applied since 2004 with an emphasis on ensuring the sustainability of regulations. A focus of the effort is to bolster the confidence of foreign tourists.

The deputy commander assured that the ongoing work has so far been effective and this latest activity is to carry on the successes of the organization by identifying any obstacles or inefficiencies.

Is it just me, or does this official news release basically say nothing?

"The deputy commander assured that the ongoing work has so far been effective and this latest activity is to carry on the successes of the organization by identifying any obstacles or inefficiencies."

I can help with identifying obstacles and inefficiencies. Two words: "Mafia" and "Corruption".

Whenever the police or military get involved in these issues, whether a show of force along Bangla, beach organisation, sunbed inspection or whatever, the press always seem to come up with this term "to bolster the confidence of foreign tourists".

I don't know about most tourists but it would have the opposite effect on me and I really don't believe that tourists who are on holiday to relax and enjoy themselves are too enamoured about encountering police and military personnel in such numbers. It makes the place look like a police state or a military-run country. Oh!!!!!

"I can help with identifying obstacles and inefficiencies. Two words: "Mafia" and "Corruption" - and those two words have now become an obstacle to tourism, business, profits, and a sustainable local economy.

Meanwhile in the rest of Asean. Life is normal, and tourism booming?

If it is like Pattaya, the moment the Army disappears, usually the following day, all returns to how it was.
