Bangkok’s CCTV cameras, which have been primarily used for traffic control, will be utilised more effectively to fight crime, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA).

The move was initiated as three government agencies Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding.

CCTV footage will be linked and used in crime prevention in line with a Cabinet resolution calling for the state, the private sector and the public to cooperate to reduce crime.

BMA deputy permanent secretary Pichai Kriengwatanasiri said the city’s CCTV system had proved useful in arresting criminals.

IMHO this is an excellent move, as they have done so well solving the traffic problems, for sure once they are redirected crime in Bangkok will be a thing of the past.

They come with a special software that shuts them down automatically the moment HiSo's, people in uniform, and influential figures are scanned by face recognition.

That assumes they are working.

That assumes they didn't really mean it..... just a PR gag.

Good move! They don´t do much for traffic, so let´s see if they can produce any result here.

Are they working...

Its the perception of working that is the deterrent

Having the cameras is good but totally useless if the people monitoring the cameras are taking no notice and if the storage is non-functional.
