Apartment building partially collapses in Ramkhamhaeng

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok City’s Department of Public Work on Wednesday morning inspected an apartment building in Ramkhamhaeng that partially collapsed late Tuesday night, possibly due to soil subsidence as the location used to be a rice field.

 

The partial collapse of the two-storey 20-room building in Soi Ramkhamhaeng 39 in Wang Thong Lang district took place at about 10.20pm and caused two slight injuries. 

 

It also caused a short circuit, prompting officials to cut power to the premises. 

 

A tenant of the building, Somboon Doklang, said she had heard concrete creaking at about 11am on Tuesday when workers were drilling concrete to lay pipes and then she left for work. 

 

She returned that night and saw the building had sunk about a metre sunken and its walls had cracks in them, so she alerted authorities.

 

Wang Thong Lang District Office director Jitlada Thanomsak said the 20-year-old building was located on an old rice field, so its partial collapse may have stemmed from soil subsidence. 

 

Jitlada said officials had aided tenants by providing them temporary shelter, as residents were barred from entering the building while the incident was inspected.

 

Metropolitan Police Area 4 chief Maj-General Nanthachat Supamongkol said no charges had been filed at this stage, pending the result of the probe. 

 

The building has 33 tenants but only 19 had no place to stay after the incident. Of the 19, 10 will stay at police flats and the rest at a nearby community centre.

Of course the partial collapse couldn't be blamed on skimping of materials,  use of defective materials, and or insufficient foundation.....Thai's are known to be skin flints when it comes to building!

How unusual to find a building on land that was once a rice field  !

In Thailand ?  I never imagined it could be possible !

Of course, they don't mention it was built on a rice field without compacting the soil and driving pilings.

Just wait until those 20 and 30 stories buildings down town start to list to one side.Here in LOS it is bound to happen.This was only a 20 year old 2 story.

Rice field or not. A real engineer would professionally design the size and depth of the concrete foundation to carry the load. There is a .5 to 1 meter void under our 15 year old house I observed in my pre-purchase inspection. Although I also noted that the the load bearing elements of the rest of the house are carrying the load just fine. Not even a crack anywhere in the "in fill" walls. Helps to be an engineer in our case.
