first time install of win10 on new laptop from USB

Featured Replies

just bought a new laptop with the usual non windows OS and want to install a new win10 home from the microsoft USB...I now have the laptop plugged in and the USB plugged into the port and now have the following prompt:

C:\>

what's next?

I've searched for previous threads with no success...if there is one please post a link...

thanks in advance...

You will need to enter the BIOS and tell the machine to boot from USB. On some brands of machine there is a key combination to do this at boot without entering the BIOS. If so it may flash up in small print on-screen when the machine starts.

Is this a guess the brand name and model number game?

Is the installation media bootable?

Did you set the machine to boot from USB?

there is no option that I can see to pre configure anything...the above prompt appears after I turn on the machine and requires a response...

the media is a MS USB stick that came in a MS win10 box, etc...

enter the BIOS? (gulp) that makes me nervous...

maybe better to take it someplace where folks know what they're doing? I expected a win10 installation screen to appear automatically on first start up with the USB plugged in but not the case apparently...

the instructions in the win10 box say to configure the machine to boot from the USB drive on start up but the prompt presumes that things have been booted already...

I meant brand name and model number of the laptop ;)

it's a lenovo 700...I thought that this issue was common to new laptops in Thailand that are sold without a (windows) OS...never bought a laptop in Thailand before...

You need to get to the multi-boot menu where you can select loading from USB.  Try pressing the F2 key repeatedly right after you turn on the laptop.

thanks, tried that but on power up the machine marches on with the installed OS even when I press f2 repeatedly...

I understand that I have to select the USB drive to boot the machine but can't seem to get into the associated menu prior to boot...

the installed OS is FreeDOS 123 - InitDisk

Try the other F buttons til you get the right one. One of them should get you to the uefi  where you can see the boot menu

Perhaps you are not pressing the Fn key in conjunction.

The first or the Novo button should do it.

you got it...never hadta use them fn buttons before...and now, success!

look like I got it sorted with the win10 installation...I'll be back if there's any other difficulty...

thanks to all for your help...

What OS did it come with?

^^see post #7,  the installed OS is FreeDOS 123 - InitDisk...

hey, I gotta tell ye...stay away from ASUS laptops, I got an ASUS bought 2 years ago in saudi and the keyboard started givin' probs the first week and now is unusable but the rest of it is still strong...beware of laptops that register a keystroke with a palpable clunk...

the new lenovo is soooo much nicer and about the same spec but the ASUS came with win 8 already installed for about the same price...

Change the keyboard. Perhaps 1000 baht or 2....

I now have Windows 10 installed and OK except for one thing; when I have the external hard drive connected to the laptop I can't boot up and get an OS error message...disconnect the drive and then OK and then it connects OK when plugged in...

never seen this before...a bit of an annoyance...the hard drive is a 1TB Transcend using NTFS...

You could try changing the drive letter in Disk Management (right-click on the start button and then Disk Management) to something that hasn't been used before.

When Disk Management opens, right-click on the drive you want to change and click on 'Change drive letter and path' and follow the instructions. Once changed, shutdown your computer and restart.

Note: this isn't a given, but it has worked for me in the past with externals.

Of course begin with the Boot sequence.

+1

It sounds like the BIOS is configured to first boot from the external drive, and then secondarily from the computer's internal hard drive.  If the external drive is not connected, it automatically goes to the internal hard drive and boots.  However, if the external drive *is* connected that's as far as the boot process goes, and of course it can't boot from the external drive.

It's entirely possible this is a result from you configuring the computer to boot from the USB drive to install Windows.  Just undo what you did.

yeah...went back into f2 and made the internal drive the top priority and now it works like it should...had to stay in legacy mode...

many thanks to everyone for their help...that BIOS business is something that I never messed with before...and now I have emerged as a stronger and more capable tutsiwarrior...

gonna hire out tomorrow as a BIOS applications specialist...
