Customs tax for computer parts in luggage?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am moving to Bangkok at the end of the month and will be flying with 2 check-in suitcases (20kg each). I own a small form factor (ITX) desktop PC. I plan to dismantle it and pack the components in one of my check-in suitcases. I will be leaving the computer case/chassis here and buying another one in Bangkok as it's by far the most bulky part of the computer. Will I have any issues with customs tax or any other problems with doing this? The components are fairly small. I have the receipt of purchase that is dated October 2015. Does it matter if I pack them in original boxes or not? My thinking is if they are not in original boxes they will then not be mistaken for new components?

Also, does anyone know what the maximum suitcase size is for Thai Airways?

I can only see weight at the following link.

I plan to call them and ask, was just curious if anyone here knows.

Thanks in advance.

Lowe's sells excellent moving boxes that are 18 x 18 x 24 inches...that will maximize your haul and not go over.

When I moved to, and then back from, Mexico I packed the motherboard, CPU, hard drives and video card in my carry-on suitcase.  The mobo was in the original box to give it some proteciton.  That was with an mATX system.  You'd definitely be able to do that with an ITX system.  I even included a LCD monitor that just fit, but it was an old one, so a bit on the small size.  The monitor was the main source of fascination by the security folks.  They didn't care at all about the rest of the electronics in the rollaboard suitcase.

I was concerned about possible rough handling of and/or pilferage from checked baggage, which is why I decided to go the carry-on route.  The computer components were padded (but not tightly packed) with clothing.

FWIW, I currently have an ITX system and bought a CoolerMaster Elite 110 case (THB 1,290) online from InvadeIT, and am quite pleased with it.

There's no import duty on computer parts, just the 7% VAT when importing - but in your case, just hide them in your bag and pass in the green line, nobody will care about the bag.
