Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha speaks at Government House on Tuesday.

BANGKOK — Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha said Tuesday he will approve the purchase of two submarines from China when the matter reaches the Cabinet.

Speaking to reporters after a weekly Cabinet meeting, Gen. Prayuth said it’s necessary to buy the submarines from a foreign country because Thailand still can’t make one on its own, and announced that the Chinese even offered to give the third one for free.

Ever the price maker, the PM over look one thing, why would you want

any submarine at all? let alone 3 of them, they cost a fortune to run

and maintain, and Thailand doesn't have enough enemies to warrant

having subs... but hey, he's not the man to pass on a bargain....

They won't be able to dive because there's too much plastic down there [emoji23]

They will be able to dive for sure.. the problem is once they go under they may not be able to resurface from the weight of the trash they pick up going down.. not to mention whatever gets wrapped up in trash on the props.

If somebody offered to give away 1 submarine if I bought 2, I would really considering taking the order to a more serious business partner that concentrates on the quality instead.

Get those noses in the trough! Ordering my new car.

Yessir, 'fat kickback' is the word, in that way or another ...

"But you have to take into account there's that expensive empty submarine center which needs to be stocked with subs - only for show of course, too expensive (& high-tech, let alone pretty useless) to run anyway but hey, let's just use them as 'museums', maybe like that aircraft-carrier we already wasted a fortune on ... These subs can be a tourist attraction like at disneyland.

Buy 2 get 1 free. That right there says it all.

Whats next?

I know it will be about as lame as this.

Thailands biggest threat is terrorism But no lets go buy subs and maybe those terrorists wont mess with us.

Incompetent people turning thailand into disneyland..

I have never seen it mentioned, but does Thai Navy have any skilled submariners ? So who the hell is going to crew these subs ?  Maybe bring in some foreigners to teach them ? Doubt they will ever go to sea.

This has really got disaster written all over it . I'm presuming as mentioned in a earlier post when first suggested they do this they will come with spares and back up. How's long before they will have  canabalised one for parts !! Also what's provision have they got for rescuing submariners from a sunken sub . Expensive pieces of kit and take a lot to keep them maintained and working . Can Thai navy manage it ??!! the aircraft carrier would tell you No !! Can see the picture opportunities already when they turn up and are all moored alongside each other ! impressive im sure ! Year down the line they will still be there but probably not capable of making it to sea ! What a waste of money but guess they have spent a fortune on making a base for them and even have personel assigned to the only submarine pens who haven't any subs !

There may be something in Thai DNA regarding "buy 1 get 1" irresistible force they cannot walk away from.  When shopping with the wife, seeing "buy 1 get 1" pulls her in like a black hole. Reasonable me asks such silly questions as "Do we need this stuff?" and "Would you use it?" etc. The answer: "It's buy 1 get 1!!!!"

Forget vaccines against Ebola, AIDS, dengue. If they could vaccinate against this mental quirk, they'd be doing a great public service

To say nothing of making a deal with the devil trying to gain manipulative influence (spare parts, overhaul, expertise, joint training) over Thai military in the future.

The stated mission: Neighboring countries already have subs.  How rediculous.

Where is the sense of priorities ?

Good job Khun Prayuth .....   the running and maintenance will create hundreds if not thousands of jobs for the Navy and third party suppliers.

:jap:

As would of new schools, hospitals........  never mind.
