UK visit visa interview - flight booking required?

Does anyone know if a flight booking is required for a UK visit visa application interview?

No, they specifically say not to book ahead.  There is no interview by the way, just a application drop.

...and biometrics check, ie. matching the applicant with the documents being submitted.
