These did the job on my Ford Mk1 Consul,

http://www.cordsduaflex.com/whycords.html

Took the plugs out dropped the sump, pulled pistons, installed the new rings, they supplied ring compression tool which enabled piston re-entry to cylinders.

Fitted new big-end shells while l was at it, Weekend job.

Sold it some three years later still running fine.

Without removing the crankshaft !!.... Only joking pal.

You were lucky you could do that as a lot of (modern) engines you cannot slide the pistons out the bottom, old skool for the win !!

Yeah with modern engines I suppose you could set up a pulley to  lift the cylinder block off like motorbikes.

Or remove the head and take the pistons out the top of the block.

Yeah of course the way it's done now l guess.

Dunno about whether OP's mileage is that high on a diesel engine only 150, 000 + miles   one of my old company cars we kept for some of the staff to use if they had trouble with their motors,  it was petrol and had done nearly 200,000 miles.

Good oils have been about for years.

Yeah 250k on a Mitsi <deleted> engine should not need new pistons as it is running fine (surely rings would go first). The dealer to suggest this seems very off indeed, unless there is more to the story that's not been told (or something has been lost in translation).

If the engine really is that bad new pistons are needed then I'd be looking at a new long block or new vehicle from a different manufacturer !!

Is it possible there is a translation problem here and the AC service people are talking about replacing the AC compressor?

You must ask them the reason for piston change and let us know..

That job would take a long time as it is a complete engine tear down. It is normal to have a re-bore if pistons are changed, using +30th over size pistons..

With the info / advice i have received here i'll report back with what there reasoning is and how they came to the conclusion pistons need changed.

They will probably say the computer said so.

Ask someone to follow you and tell you what colour of smoke, if any, comes out the back.

Black, it's running rich, to much fuel.

Blue, when you accelerate pistons/bore/rings.

Blue, when you lift of the throttle and use the engine to slow you down,

Valves or valve guides.

Lots of blue when ticking over, combination of everything above.
