pmarlin Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 http://www.militarytimes.com/articles/trump-budget-va-boosts-benefits-trims Those of you who are getting VA disability payments from Veterans affairs and also getting Social security or will soon get it you need to pay attention and read the above article in the Army Times.
Berkshire Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Interesting.... [Trump has proposed stopping those payouts once veterans are eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, arguing the practice now amounts to “the duplication of benefits.” It would impact more than 225,000 veterans receiving the payouts today.] I wonder if any vets in Thailand are impacted.
tomwct Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 As a Vietnam Vet it sounds okay to me! They are stopping what they call double dipping!
tifino Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 pity they don't keep it simple, and try the Australian way... the Social Security payment(s) are reduced/modified in accordance with their method of applying the Disabilty Veteran payments - to an Incomes and Assets Test. it is better this way - to keep the Veterans' Disability payments as the permanent one - after all a permanent/chronic disability is just that!! it ends up to the observer in a similar way, in that DoubleDipping is prevented - but a Veteran's problems do not go away
pmarlin Posted June 5, 2017 Author Posted June 5, 2017 More to it than some think. While those veterans were on disability they weren't working so no contribution to Social Security. That means a very low social security monthly payment. One of the main reasons for the VA payment was to offset this difference and again the bean counters in Washington DC missed that.
