PHUKET: -- A speedboat carrying 20 passengers crashed with another at the Boat Lagoon in Koh Kaew yesterday evening. No injuries were reported.

A speedboat belonging to ‘Golden Dragon Tour 1’ was carrying passengers from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket when it collided with, and landed partly on top of, another speedboat, ‘K. Kanreab’, which was not carrying any passengers at the time.

“Teerachai Maimard, the "captain" of Golden Dragon Tour1, sped up the boat in order to tread through shallow water.

Just don't forget:-

The mentality/training behind this incident has to be associated/migrated to ALL modes of transport in Thailand: Including the driver at the pointy end of Aircraft we fly in, the idiot behind the wheel of Mini and so called VIP Busses, Taxis, etc

This country is scary with a Junta doing SFA about it!

Photo must have been photoshoped as so many on here say how wonderfully safe the country is to live in.

It is safe! There's life vests on both boats!

I thought mounting in public was deemed inappropriate

Well, at least the speedboat on the bottom was wearing a bikini -- same as the recently shuttered sex show performer.

Not quite Darwin awards which honors those who accidentally remove themselves from the gene pool (i.e. by killing themselves in some obscure or just plan stupid manner).

That said: Your point is made.

Also, how insulting is it for the True Captains of vessels that the media refers to these chancers as Captains...

For how long could this guy operating the boat not have looked ahead.. it must have been minutes...

Not under my last seat going to Phi Phi, I guess someone must have nicked it or forgot to buy one

With that area being very, very shallow it is highly unlikely he did not look ahead. The explanation given (hydraulic issue) is more likely.

That's just the marine version of "failed brakes".

Well it did say he sped up then had hydraulic failure, they speed up to get onto the plane thus less draft, no matter it is a mangrove area with a speed limit !

Also if your steering fails the sensible option is to stop.

Agree with all. So does that mean he did not look ahead?

Most likely is that he sped up thinking he could pass the already stranded boat, then the steering failed and it was either too late to stop or he panicked and try to steer harder, in vain.
