Obviously the issue with buying a used car is assessing its condition. I know it's not standard practice here,  but I would like to have a car checked at a proper car repair center before I buy it (both to make sure it didn't have any major crashes, as well as to get an idea about repairs that will be needed in near future).

Any recommendations where it can be done, and how much should such an inspection cost?

Google search would be best.

Difficult if it's an old car, maybe better if recent less than 3 years.

You can get independent companies to check cars over at the used dealer and at owners houses,  not sure how that would work out.

Maybe telephone the previous owner if buying from a dealer.

Buying private phone their insurers could be a way..

You can bring it to car dealer to check. It should be easy to check. There is always risk getting used car!
