Agricultural export grows by 61% during 2017's first five months

BANGKOK, 4 July 2017 (NNT) – Thailand's agricultural export has grown by 61 percent, amounting to 98 billion baht during this year's first five months.

Deputy Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) Secretary-General Rangsit Poosiripinyo disclosed Thailand's agricultural export made a total value of 718.95 billion baht, accounting for a two percent increase from the same period last year, with 552.291 billion baht being the export value which increased by 8.8 percent, and 166.659 billion being the import value which reduced by 15 percent.

The figures show Thailand has had a trade surplus by 385.632 billion baht, marking a 24 percent increase from the corresponding period last year, with major export markets being the ASEAN countries which contributed to 26 percent of all export products, including sugar, fruits, and rubber.

Another significant export market for Thailand was China which contributed 16 percent of all agricultural exports. Key export items to China included rubber, tapioca and rice. Japan followed by 13 percent of all agricultural exports with major items being processed foods and rubber. The export value for the United States market contributed to 11 percent of agricultural exports, and the European Union by nine percent. Major export items to the US are processed foods and rubber, while key export items to the EU are processed foods, rubber, and food seasonings.

Thailand's negotiation efforts for trade partners to accept the country's agricultural standards gave the opportunity for Thai products to be exported to new markets such as South Korea where Thailand can resume the export of fresh and frozen chicken meat, valued at 91 million baht during the first five months this year. The negotiation to export fish and seafood to the Russian market also contributed to 179 million baht export value, while the export to Mexican market accounted for 19 million baht.

Whaaaaaaat?

Thailand's agricultural export has grown by 61 percent"

agricultural export made a total value of 718.95 billion baht, accounting for a two percent increase from the same period last year,"

so grown 61% over what?

I read the article a few times and still don't understand much of what is written. From the title, I was expecting to read at least an interesting manipulation of numbers to explain the headline. All I got was a statement contradicting the headline and gibberish. Why post this garbage, particularly with such a misleading title?

Maybe the increase was 1.2% last year and an increase of 2% would be approx. 60% increase on last year's increase???

That sounds like a good mathematical interpretation of the quality of their statistics.

Not clear but it might be due to resumption of fresh and frozen chicken meat exports to South Korea valued at 91 million baht during the first five months this year - about half what it exported to Russia.

If so, a year-to-year comparison would be deceptive.

It is a composite of a 15% reduction of ag imports and an increase in ag exports.

It really makes you anti Thai posters stew on your ulcers doesn't it.

Most of you do not live in Thailand or if you do, have never ventured out of your little slums in Pattaya

or Phuket. Chew on your ulcers, my wife is contributing to the ag output as are all our neighbours.

They are paying cash for new cars and tractors. PS. invest in Yanmar or Kubota, sales are booming.

They are upgrading or building new homes. Business is booming. Meanwhile, you need to grab

another handful of antacid pills and sulk in the bar. Great news for Thailand again since the

failed rice scheme and the failed former politicians exited stage left.

Well your first line does make sense. You should have stopped there. The headline reads

"Agricultural export grows by 61%"

not "Agricultural trade surplus grows by 61%"

two very different things.

I am neither an Anti Thai poster or a Thai can do no wrong poster.Pretending something makes sense doesn't help anyone. News is meant to inform, you should not need to devine the meaning of each sentence, particularly totally erroneous headlines. You keep living in your dream world as long as you can. You are just as bad as the anti Thai posters.

Well I stopped any economic response after my first line which was 15% reduction of imports

and increase in Thai ag exports over last year may equal a claim for the 61%.

I did stop there, I make no claims about trade surplus. I leave that to you

and your rant. But you got it off your chest and I am sure you feel much

better and superior now.. As for me living my dream, I am.

You truly do need to get out of the bar and visit some - any Thai rural area.

And you need to stop believing you are an economist.

And to the farang nayers and whingers .....  :partytime2:

Well done Khun Prayuth Chan O Cha ....

Thailand has done well since the PM came to power, we can hope that the Junta and Khun Prayuth stay there for a very long time.

I love Thailand, I love the security and the stability they bring to government and the people who otherwise want to cause mayhem.

Again, for those who don't enjoy the country they reside in I feel sorry if that's what each day brings,  I know I would change my home if that was me. :wai:

Prayut in an all white snowflake-like uniform reminds me of the dialog in Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk where protagonist Tyler Durden says to his herd of anarchists, “You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.”

555 I see, so your proclamation that it is a composite was just a guess. You wrote like you knew this info from a more clearly written source. Considering the accuracy of your assumptions about me, I will discount your guess about the origin of the 61% claim. In the future please refrain from pretending to know something when you are just guessing. I should have known better after reading the silly comment about all your neighbors going on a spending spree and paying cash for everything. You may now continue your fantasy.
