BANGKOK: -- Southern rubber growers are up in arms against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha over his recent remark blaming massive encroachment of forest reserves for rubber cultivation on three million rai of encroached land for causing rubber price slump.

In his Facebook post, Mr Sunthorn Rakrong, president of the Association of Rubber Growers in 16 Southern Provinces, today (July 10) dismissed the prime minister’s July 3 remark.

He said encroaching on forest to grow rubber tree which resulted in over-cultivation of rubber might be the cause of rock-bottom price slump three years ago, but not now.

I wouldn't think warning PM Prayut is necessarily a smart or healthy thing to do given his petal like sensitivity. Reminding people of who is the boss is right up his alley.

Even so, the alienation of people seems to be common practice by the PM lately. Why should southern rubber growers be an exception?

Why should a PM give in every time someone holds up his or her hands ? if it isnt the rice farmers its the rubber growers. They never seem to want to change.. just a handout and continue like before. Now if there were real plans like giving back those 3 million rai to the forest and thus having less rubber supply (paying those for giving it back of course to help them a bit if they are small farmers) sure. But handouts without change are just as bad as handing out money to the rice farmers without change or new plans.

Indeed.. whenever there is some kind of increase everyone is holding their hand up.. who pays it the middle class. They get screwed over all the time. Normal salary workers get screwed over all the time here.. they are almost the only ones who pay income tax. Others hide it, small traders cook the books and don't pay. But those with a bit of salary always have to pay and see it paid out to others all the time. Quite frustrating.

first they encroach, then they DEMAND what was in essence a subsidy, then they warn; Great  group; PM should just take back the land

where is the logic in that ? definition of stupidity, do the exact same think the second time around and expect a different result

The reason for the price slump is the same... over production.. and those 3 million rai are contributing to the over production.

The rubber farmers should understand as they produce more and more rubber to an international market that is already flooded with rubber thanks to a low oil price making it cheaper to make tires from synthetic rubber than from natural rubber and so on is not Prajuts fault... it's actually their own fault!
Even my students can understand that and they are studying to become farmers!

Yes but like the rice farmers they want a handout.. its always the same with farmers.. if it goes well.. spend like there is no tomorrow.. if it goes bad.. hold up your hand. (generalization I know)

Thai mentality, Somchai is growing eucalyptus  and making money, lets do the same.

Somchai is growing rubber, and making money lets do the same.

Somchai is growing limes and making money lets do the same.

Bloody crazy but it is happening all the time, they havent got the brains to see if there is over supply the market will crash, then they moan and start demanding payouts.

I think this worried the Dem more than Prayut. The warning from the southern rubber farmers is indirectly aimed at the Dem. They may lose major seats in the South if Prayut don't bow to their demand. I see a massive subsidy scheme in the making. They can't afford to lose South seats as it may give the majority to PTP. Fun and games to follow.

Pretty ironic given it was the protest support given to Suthep by the southern rubber growers that helped topple the previous regime.

The ones I spoke to clogging up Sanam Luang at the time wanted a coup and for the Democrats to be shoe horned back into the driving seat.

Ah well ......... be careful what you wish for.

Same the world over, once an industry gets its lips around the government teat, all need to be competitive disappears. Many a big business survives through government largess, either through erecting barriers to new competitors or getting money for nothing. Free enterprise dies when government and noncompetitive big business gets in bed together.

Mind you it does allow for the not so bright to survive protected dinosaur companies as CEOs.
