Pranom Kongpikul

BANGKOK: -- THE SCANDAL-HIT deputy director of the National Buddhism Office (NBO) has now been transferred out of her post to facilitate ongoing probes against her.

Pranom Kongpikul is accused of embezzling funds that the NBO allocated for temple renovations. Several monasteries allege that she and some other NBO officials had asked that portions of project funds be returned, claiming that these portions would be used to help other religious sites.

In the wake of the scandal, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha signed an order to transfer Pranom to the Office of the Civil Service Commission.

“Her transfer takes place to facilitate the work of two fact-finding committees established by the NBO,” PM’s Office Minister Ormsin Chivapruck said yesterday.

If found guilty, Pranom will face both disciplinary and legal actions.

Pranom will reach her mandatory retirement age at the end of September.

“We are also investigating other accused officials,” Ormsin said. He added that temples had provided good cooperation to investigators.

In a related development, Justice Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana disclosed that he had already assigned the Anti-Corruption Centre to discuss with the National Police Office’s Counter Corruption Division and the NBO how it can help facilitate their investigations.

Give them a uniform and they cannot help but imitate the military!

Oh I always thought they learned it from the red Master...

But in reality its just so ingrained to abuse ones position that much stronger checks are needed and real punishment where they lose all the money they stole and stuff like pension right ect.

Can be conveniently forgotten about in a couple of months then.

Would it not be nice if they reclaimed stolen money.. and made sure that she lost her pension rights.

It would, I have my doubts that will happen but live in hope.

You and me both, I don't care what side they are on.. but if corruption is proven they should be punished. Preferably by getting the ill gotten gains and some extra punishment like prison time and or a high fine.

Let me guess-"some other NBO officials" are men of "influence" not to be included in Prayut's transfer order?

Those doing the punishing are only doing so to enhance their own ability to be corrupt i.e. the net result of removing some (allegedly) corrupt individuals is an increase in the overall level of corruption.

This means you are supporting increased corruption.

How wonderful of you.

You can't hedge bets when it comes to the impartial delivery of justice.

If all are not treated equally under the law then there is no justice.
