Wow, who would have thought that  real punishment. Its not much but its more then expected many thought he would have walked away.
 
The only part I don't get.. he confessed.. went to jail and now his lawyer wants to appeal and bail.. how so if you confess ?

He confessed to something but could be granted bail if he decides to appeal the length of his sentence.

Yeap, when I first read the headline I was expecting to see that he was granted bail straight away. I didn't believe for a second that he was gonna spend anytime inside. Lo and behold, we now have the reports that he's out on bail. 

 

Even before we knew he had bail, some people were praising the system that he received any prison time at all. The bar is sadly set very low.

Same here, when they didn't mention bail it actually occurred to me that after 3 years this might be the first ray of light that things could actually be changing under the current regime.

 

That optimism lasted less than 5 minutes.

he will buy his way out of jail if he has the money. rich people dont stay in prison long. it is only for the poor. the only 2 people i know who went to prison in thailand were offered a payout deal when they arrived. it even has a standard THB/year value. jails must be a great business although i doubt many people who have money end up getting sent there in the first place.

He will appeal and it will take another 5 to 10 years before the Supreme court will decrease his sentence to a suspended sentence with community service. At that stage all the outrage about this case will have died down and he will walk free. The same happened to the 15 yr old girl who killed 9 people and drove without a dl. But then again she had a very long surname, which helped.

 

Regarding the confession. It is standdard practice to confess when guilty because they half your sentence. But in this case it is part of the strategy to soften the judges. He will get bail, appeal and will never see the inside of a jail.

What a great deal ! How could he NOT confess ? I still have serious doubts that this menace will ever spend any time in jail, such is the system here.

The Drunk CM student who killed 3 bicyclists got 2 years and just appealed it...it has been over 2 years since the accident and she has yet to spend one night in jail...she should have been locked up until the verdict but not in LOS...

 

i I prefer the CA serial cat killer who got 16 years just this week....justice was done..

2 1/2 year is disgraceful, the dude was going 250 km/h and slammed straight into the back of a car. 2 families are without their children now and will never ever see them again and all he gets is a measly 2 1/2 years.

Im not sure what the situation is in Thailand but in western world if you got 2 1/2 years then wouldn't do that long in prison probably a year. Its almost like we are all sitting ducks on the roads.

His crime was close to murder and well documented on cctv .The original sentence was lenient and to get it reduced by 50% by confessing is really laughable and an insult to the memory of two young people wiped out by another rich idiot .

The law in Thailand is open to a lot of interpretation. Judges do not have to use precedents and thus each case can be very different. Perhaps in the case of Boss Red Bull the judge has not yet had the kid in court to decide he likes the cut of his jib and guilty or not the sentence may be not be what the public expects.

And appealing an already halved sentence when it was already commuted generously is a disgrace. I hope the sentence is at least served although i guess it won't be

 

I hope that his sentence is increased to 20 years on appeal.  Or more would not get a complaint from me.

He bought his way out with 200.000THB and an appeal from his lawyer.

Man jailed and has license revoked following crash that killed two
 

 
AYUTTHAYA: -- A Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to two years and six months in jail for driving his Mercedes into another car, killing two post-graduate students in Ayutthaya province in March last year.
 
Janepob Veeraporn, 37, will have his driving license revoked for life.
 
The Court initially ruled to jail Janepob for five years but reduced the sentence to 2 years and six months as the defendant confessed.
 
Janepob's Mercedes slammed at high speed into the back of a Ford sedan carrying Thanthapat Horsaengchai, 34, and Kritsana Thaworn, 32, on Phahlyothin Road in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district on March 13.
 
The Ford burst into flames and both post-graduate students were killed.
 
It is not known whether Janepob will be granted bail or not.

If the civil courts can parlay this conviction into a large award to the families it will hurt him where he lives. I realize it won't replace two young lives.

The poor husband and wife mushroom pickers (MP) got a 15 year reduction and then another 3 years off for (don't know the reason). Point well made!

Do you recall the recent case of the popcorn gunman? He also confessed. He also was declared innocent after his appeal.

 

This seems just the latest in the way they're handling the cases of the rich. You toss away the most serious charges as unable to be proven by making sure nobody tests the driver when the accident happens, and so that goes away (Red Bull case also). You then get the tearful confession/wai to the victim/entering the monkhood. You then get the court trial, usually long after the event so that the anger and memory of the incident is clouded. Once the confession halves the sentence, you appeal. Then you get rid of the rest of it or get reduced to probation. No doubt we'll have a claim that loss of driver's license for life is too harsh as it affects his ability to make a living. And voila! No jail time, no charges, no loss of driver's license, no drunk driving charge, no vehicular manslaughter, nothing. Wait for it.
