Very strange occurance at driving licence center in Khon Kaen this am. Background. I updated my licence about 9 months ago another 5 year job in KK no hassle yellow book and copy ect passport only to see non o visa and copy of same. They put my yellow book number on D/L did not have to do 1hr video.

Took another farang in this am to get initial 5 year from 2 year temp. Same as me yellow book  passport copy visa ect. They would only issue him another 2 year temp. Asked the lady why as i got 5 year with same paperwork.

Reason best we could make out things have changed plus she was abused by a farang about 4 months ago accusing her of stupidity and lying no idea why. Anyway supervisor took us to one side told us due to this incident they had been insrtructed to only issue temp 2 year D/L to farang now regardles of what type of visa they have.

Now i have no idea if this is going to be the norm or wether we or he just struck unlucky on the day.

No video for him either.

As he said hes not bothered temp can do everything a 5 year one can.

Anyone else had this at KK DTO 1 (in city centre)

Except maybe get a Thai IDP should he need one.

Are they saying the same if someone already has a 5 year?

As said she said all falang. IDP not a great issue. He says he has used his 2 yr temp to hire cars in UK no problems. HE dont go anywhere else would need to drive if he did he'd use his UK licence

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there getting your 5 year renewal in before some aberrant idiot screwed the pooch. I hate it when they do that!

Hoping your mate manages to continue dodging the bullet viz the 2-year Thai license being accepted by UK rental shops. Maybe depends on where the rental branch he uses is located? Pretty sure all the main ones at MAN won't take anything less than a Thai 5-year DL. Renting a car in the UK with a UK DL seems to require a veritable tome of additional proof such as credit card in same name as renter AND the renters DL address to match that in bank statements, tax or utility bills and the like... plus he will need the PIN code from DVLA so that the car rental desk jockey can access the DVLA database to check on his points tally.
