New requirement for you who are applying for a permanent residence permit to be able to support yourself


If you submit your application for a permanent residence permit to the police 1 September 2017 or later, there is a new requirement. You must have had your own income and cannot have received social security benefits during the last 12 months.

If you submit your application to the police before 1 September, this new requirement does not apply to you. The requirement does also not apply if you are under 18 years old or 67 years old or older.

It is the Norwegian parliament and government that has decided this requirement.

The new requirement only apply to you if you are applying for a permanent residence permit, not if you are applying to renew your residence permit

What is the new requirement?

If you submit your application for permanent residence permit to the police on 1 September 2017 or later you must, during the 12 last months, have had a total income or business income of at least NOK 238 784 pre-tax.

Some people are exempt from this requirement or have a lower requirement for income.

You must also not have received social security benefits from NAV during the last 12 months.

Is it necessary for you to have your own income?

When applying for permanent residence permit you must have your own income to meet the new requirement.

You cannot include the income of your spouse or another family member. You may also not include any money that you have been gifted by someone or money in your bank account.

Who does the requirement apply to?

The requirement apply to those who are between 18 and 67 years old when the police or the UDI considers the application. Some people between 18 and 67 years old are exempted from the requirement.
