Best British Music

Featured Replies

Okay, I've been watching some music docs lately and have been exposed to some stuff I didn't know before. I want to ask the members here what are some of their faves and what is considered good music from the UK. I know Radiohead, I know Bowie and so on, but I want to learn more.

Thanks. Thaibebop

Two of his finest, IMHO.

I'm into the whole collection... just liked that album art though. :o

Jesus, Bops, don't get me going. :o

My favourite Pink Floyd, but take your pick from so many fine albums.

The original Fleetwood Mac with the line-up of Peter Green (arguably the best guitar player in the world at the time), Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. "Live in Boston" was their last live gig before the departure of the eccentric Green. Concert was released on three volumes. A must for early Fleetwood Mac fans.

What about newer stuff, not that I am not interested in older stuff, but those groups are well know to me and well loved by me.

The Who, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple..... many many more on that list.

Add one personal fav, Genesis, when Gabriel was still with them (they still weren't too bad when he split)

Oh and Marillion with Fish.

Of the more recent ones, the Stone Roses have to be top of the list....... "Love Spreads" is a classic to be.

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones

Steeleye Span

Fairport Convention

Led Zepplin

The Cure

The Smiths

The Sisters of Mercy

Joy Division

etc, etc, etc... :o

Okay still most of these I know, yet Stone Roses is one I hear of but not heard. Why is Stone Roses so good?

ELO was a one of. No one fused orchestra with rock better than they did. Fantastic melodies.

Here's some album art that a Kansas boy would appreciate.

Who could forget this one? Not me.

ELO was a one of. No one fused orchestra with rock better than they did.

Love ELO but the had some close competition with the orchestration.

Not to mention when Procul Harum recorded this one here in the great frozen north. (With the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra)

Don't forget Nick Drake - soft and magical songs with excellent and unorthodox acoustic guitar playing and excellent voice/string arrangements. Look for the album 'Five Leaves Left' - perfect for a lazy autumn or winter morning when it's chilly outside.

Some other British bands worth checking out

Jesus and Mary Chain

Charlatans

Ocean Colour Scene

Placebo

Depeche Mode

Belle and Sebastian

New Model Army (from 'Thunder and Consolation' and onwards, their early stuff isn't that good IMO)

What about newer stuff, not that I am not interested in older stuff, but those groups are well know to me and well loved by me.

New Bands-

The Artic Monkeys

Maximo Park

Kasabian

Franz FerdinandAll of the above are rocking.

Snow Patrol(ok)

Older Bands-

Oasis

Charlatans

Stone Roses

Happy Mondays

Soup Dragons

Teenage Fanclub

The list goes on. All of the above i listen to. Got heaps more but cant remember everyone

Artic Monkeys

Razorlight (Brit?)

Fratellis

The Ordinary Boys (some crap but the occasional diamond)

The Kooks (very good IMO)

You can get feeds of UK radio stations on the net that will keep you up to date.

Once we moved back to the UK I had to listen to the radio non stop for months just to get back up to date after years of Hotel California & 15year old Red Hot Chilli tunes from thai bands in Samui.

The music scene in the UK has been a real eyeonener for hubby who was a jobbing musician in LOS & who too had 30 year old, done to death classics as his playlist. :o
