It appears lots of people have experienced the bar girl scene and appear to know lots about them. I very seldom go to the places anymore. Frankly, tired of all the nonsense they spout and the same stuff over and over again.  I have almost 5 decades visiting these places and have talked to hundreds in both Thai and English. Most do not like the job . Most do not like sex. Most drink because they have to. Some are alcoholics and addicts. Some are mentally ill. Whether they were addicts or alcoholics prior to entering the trade is unclear but certainly the trade is not helping them recover.

 

Remember that Thais are very clever at acting and hiding their true feelings. If you know them well and become friendly over a period of time- you will see the real person behind the smile or scowl. I know a few of the girls who have been successful and became owners of the bars. They don't like men at all- are hardened and disgusted with life and generally could care less about much of anything.

 

Many of the women going into the trade are fooled into believing they will get 'rich' or find that one punter who will take care of them and take them to another country.  It does happen to some and I have seen many come back to Thailand disillusioned and back in the business.

These girls would be much better off getting educated; getting a stable job paying a living Thai wage and staying in Thailand.  As Thailand becomes more industrialized and opportunities increase less and less girls will enter the trade and many of the GoGos and other  'girlie' bars will disappear.

Your last paragraph, it will not happen quickly as peerpressure will not allow it and the cultural mindset needs a huge overhaul. I met a 40 yr old woman in a beerbar a while ago who stounded me by saying that she is a good mum for her 15 yr old son, who lives with her parents. No dad in the picture. I just shook my head. Another kid who sees his mother 3 times a year.

We are talking at cross purposes.

 

I was disputing the bar layout where all the girls are behind a bar and so it would need long arms to grope them. In all the bars I have been to most the girls are in front of the bar. It will get hellish crowded if they all stoof behind the bar.

 

Otherwise whether a girl goes with customers is always down to the girl herself. Much to the chagrin of many guys who have thought otherwise. Indeed I have witnessed a couple of blow-ups in bars due the girl refusing to go after she has downed a bunch of ladydrinks.

This is definitely happening simply due to demographics. Thai women are popping out less than two kids each as opposed to 5 or 6 thirty years ago.

 

There is also the online dating scene, where the younger and prettier ones prefer to solicit rather than sit in a bar for eight hours.

 

I am feeling less positive about the economic future of Thailand. Not only are the demographics working heavily against them now, as way fewer young people are in the population as a percentage of the population. Plus very strong competition from Vietnam, a land where the mindset is study and work to get rich, a very young demographic due to a massive boost in babies after the Vietnamese war, and huge foreign investment, from memory now about 5 to 6 times the level that Thailand is receiving.

 

But I digress.

Not you, maybe. There's a difference between most Western and Thai body masses, also most Asians don't have the gene that enables people of Scandinavian descent to detoxify alcohol. Asians are not called two-pot screamers for no reason. 6.6 drinks would be more than enough for a 45 kg bar girl.

In possible to get that much money ,

3,300 thai bht a day in 30 days no way unless she is 10 out of 10 in looks and body then she gets her day of the month and that can run for up to 5 days if she is lucky.

They can still use their mouth's when the painters are in so even during that period  ( sorry sorry ) their earnings aren't that diminished ..

Depo-Provera shots are effective birth control, are cheap and only needed every 3 months, one of the side effects is no painters !!

What about getting bought out of the bar for a week or more to have a beach holiday, everything paid for, including whatever they want to eat, and in some cases whatever alcohol they want to drink. Plus, of course, the fee negotiated on top of that.

I know one that had a holiday in Germany on a temporary boyfriend.

 

Many get bought out for the duration of whichever boyfriend is in Thailand, even if they don't go to the beach etc, and they might have 2 or 3 boyfriends visiting at different times.

 

Even when just one night, they normally get dinner and breakfast.

 

seems pretty perky to me.

 

BTW, "bargirl" is a generic term for a girl that works in a place that sells alcohol and is available to go out with customers, regardless of if she works in a barbeer or a gogo.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant perks that a business might give like healthcare and retirement. Even girls who work in an office might get free drinks and dinners.

It depends on the lady and the customer. Some customers consider if they are paying 150 baht for a lady drink, then it had better contain alcohol.

Why? The customer is paying for the girl to sit with him; what is in the drink is immaterial.

Not that it's not an earner for the bars (supposed alcoholic lady drinks which do not really contain alcohol), but I think the practice is often requested by the woman receiving the drink, many of whom (but certainly not all!) do not want to get falling-over drunk with a 6-8 hour shift in front of them.  

 

Men buying drinks---whether the drinks are for women or other men--can often become belligerent and obnoxious in their desire to push others to drink alcohol. Never really understood that, but it's definitely a thing.  

 

Once, while sitting by myself in a bar I liked, in the early evening (read: I was taking it slow with the drinks), chatting with workers there I knew, some two-week millionaire comes in, very loud and "friendly" (the kind of friendly that tends to turn argumentative and even violent in the flash of an eye), and starts buying me shots of some sort of disgusting-tasting clear alcohol that he was drinking, which I can't remember the name of (something similar to Ouzo).  Not wanting to "refuse his largesse," I quietly asked the bartender, in Thai, to make my shots water, which she very discreetly and skillfully did, without the guy being any the wiser.  He got to feel important, I avoided any unpleasantness, and the bar made their profit...everybody won that night, haha.
