Just a thought about buying a new vehicle …. Most new vehicle dealers offer some form of free insurance when you purchase a vehicle from them, I understand that on buying the vehicle you are issued with a temporary Red Number Plate Number.

If you are given an Insurance company certificate by the dealers that cover the vehicle for One year, on the day you drive the new vehicle away, if you have a temporary

Red vehicle registration number plate, how does the Dealer know what the new yet

To be issued Government registration number is going to be , so it can be put on the Insurance paper work making it legal for the coming year….?

Your insurance starts the day you take delivery of the new vehicle so the date the insurance is due the next year will be before the vehicle registration is due. The dealer calls the insurance company and gives the insurance company the vehicle serial numbers. If you finance the vehicle you can be SURE that the insurance is in effect before you leave the dealership. My new car has only a piece of paper taped inside the windshield because the dealer HAD no more red plates. I was told the police wouldn't bother me. ??? Since I'm not so sure about the police, I'm sticking close to home with the new car and driving the pickup truck any long distances. I had planned a trip over the holidays with the new car but took the pickup instaed.

Thanks Gary A

Have I got this right then , on the insurance paperwork ( the Insurance Policy ) the dealership contacts the Insurance company, and gives them the vehicle serial numbers, the Insurance company then issues a policy for the coming year showing only the vehicle serial numbers , and you keep the policy paper work only showing serial numbers ,( not government registration plate number ), for one year , then on its first re -newal the government number plate number is then put on the Insurance policy paper work for the first time..?

Ive just got a new car, and the show room who did all the paper work and finance said I would have to wait

around 2 months for a correct number to be issued , and I had to pay a deposit for the red number, which I hope to get back

The insurance company only needs the dealer name and the vehicle serial numbers to issue the policy the first time. The Ford dealer was selling vehicles like hot cakes during the Motor Expo and ran out of red plates. They even had a waiting list for the red plates. I was told it would take between 30 and 45 days to get the new plates. And yes, there is a deposit for, then a refund for red plates. I had that deal when I bought my truck a couple years ago. When the first year expires, you must take the vehicle to your agent who issued your policy and that agent will take some pictures of the vehicle including the plate numbers.

As a side note, I refused the dealer insurance company and specified the company I had been using. Since my company was about the same price the dealer had no problems with that nor did Ford finance. My company had to be approved by Ford finance before they would let me take the car. I have my health and both vehicles insured with Liberty Mutual Group. (LMG).
