Biometrics

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am applying for a tourist visa 3 month for Aust, my partner has just returned home to Thailand after spending 3 months in Aust, my question is she has done biometrics last time and I presume ( yes I know I shouldn't) that they would use all the same info from her previous Bio, but they have sent me an email asking for biometrics to be done ?

I am assuming that the Australian system is similar to the UK's.

That is, biometrics have to be given each time someone applies; not least to check it's the same person!

Its is the same, Bio-metrics required for every visa application.Ref:  http://www.vfsglobal.com/Australia/Thailand//biometric-collection.html and https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa/Biom/biometrics-countries

I certainly agree with security, but do the people who make these rules, especially for developing countries like Thailand realise that not everyone has the means of travel like farang land.
My partner sits on a bus to Bangkok for around 6 hours to sit in a 10 minute interview to assess wether it's her or not every time she wants to come to Australia , then jumps on the bus home another 6 + hours. Surely fingerprints and eye scans can be saved on a computer, if I can return home to Australia with my passport without biometrics then surely it should be ok for her to enter with her passport,I mean am I missing something here. I'm certain there are tens of thousands of people around Asia putting up with an outdated system. Any answers ?

Yes, and they are. As I said above, the reason for requiring them with every application is to prevent identity fraud; i.e. ensure that the ones taken this time match the ones taken last time. If such checks were not done then there would be no point in taking them in the first place!

The UK does not require full biometrics for a British passport, so one can apply for a first one or to renew by post.

But many countries do require full biometrics, so passport applications, whether for a first passport or to renew, have to be made in person.

I don't know about Australia, but Thailand is one of those countries. See this current topic: need to fly to thai embassy in london to renew thai passport

dear god,      just received an email from thai embassy to state that my thai wife must go to london to apply in person for a new renewed thai passport.

wife is in belfast ,    i asked embassy if she can make  a postal submission application but again they reply simply stating she needs appointment at thai embassy -london

It's the same in Thailand, passports have to be applied for and renewed in person. So your partner will have to travel to her nearest passport office when the time comes to renew her passport. Indeed, as this system has been in place for more than five years, she must have done so to get her current passport, if not the one before that.

It is a sign of the times, I'm afraid. The innocent have to suffer these inconveniences because of the activities of those attempting to deceive.

For a new passport I would understand and agree with, but a bio check every time for a 3 month tourists visa for Australia, I'm still struggling to see the need.
