Reporting motorcyclists on the sidewalk - first ten "super grasses" paid out!

The first ten people to report motorcyclists on the sidewalk in Bangkok have been paid out.

Thousands are joining in to report the illegal use of the pavements and cash in on splitting fines with the local authority.

Thai Rath said in their headline - "If you want to make extra money - read on!"

The minimum you could earn for each infringement is half the lowest fine of 500 baht, that is to say 250 baht a time.

Wanchai Thanornsak of the "Thetsakit" authority said his department had received 100 reports so far and ten of these had been fined and settled already.

Five thousand people have shown an interest in being "super grasses" to help the authorities clean up Bangkok and make money on the side.

All members of the public need to do is make sure the license plate is clearly visible and send a picture on the Line application to the authorities.

They will do the rest then transfer half the fine to your bank account or send it by post - whichever is more convenient.

The scheme also refers to illegal hawking and littering offences.

The Thetsakit were previously involved in fining foreigners 2,000 baht for flinging their cigarette butts at certain high profile locations.

So now it could be payback time especially as motorcyclists riding on the sidewalk is almost a Thai national sport.

For your information, there have been farangs who have been killed in BKK in past years after/when getting run over from behind by speeding motorcyclists on the sidewalks. And, just the other day in one of the threads on this subject, a poster here mentioned having been run down from behind and having both kneecaps broken by a sidewalk motorcyclist along Silom Road.

 

So frankly, if reporting these lawbreakers who endanger those around them would help put a stop to this dangerous practice, I'd do it for free. The reward is just an added bonus.

 

The area where I live in BKK constantly has motorcyclists riding down the sidewalks, particularly along Sukhumvit Road during rush hours. Anything that helps put a stop to that is a good move in my book, reward or no reward.

Nothing wrong with dobbing in lawbreakers. We've all done it at some stage, whether it be loud music, dogs barking, yobbos doing wheelies in the street, pilfering in shops etc

 

I think it'll be a very effective campaign, and 250 baht a pop is a significant amount of easy dosh for many locals.

You mightn't find it so "petty" if you happened to be hit by a motorcyclist on the footpath. You can't rely on Thais to do "the right thing" voluntarily, this might be the only way to break a dangerous habit. Next I'd like to see reporting of motorcyclists riding on the wrong side of the road.

Been dodging them for 30 years in every country in Asia.  The difference is those country's police forces, though not corruption free by any stretch of the imagination, once in a while did actual policing.  Making potentially every Thai man, woman, child and his dog a stool pigeon, is just gauche.    Maybe "gauche" is more fitting than "petty" .

It shows lack of sophistication to just pay others to do your work for you when other more sophisticated methods are available, such as Thailand 4.0.  Use cameras.  They're cheap.  Nobody likes a snitch.

its just an annoyance having to move to let them pass. Its a farang myth they are a deadly menace and if that were the case and they were all flying then there would be hundreds of deaths. Handing the footpaths back to the people is simply required for a eventual first world transition. No way around that one

Wouldn't mind making the money or lowering the number of motorcycles on the sidewalk but I imagine they might not appreciate the falang taking photos of them driving...I think they could figure out what you're doing. Gang of motorcycle taxis here they come??

You seem to be Thailand 4.0 impaired with the rest of the country.  They can be cameras are now made to be mobile / wireless.  You can buy them disguised as hanging plants and can be moved from area to area. 

 

If you are some of the people here to hold Thailand to a lower standard than the rest of Asia, all one can say is "whatever".

However, driving your (Beamer, Porsche, Mercedes, Hi-Lux, etc) at high-speed while weaving in and out of traffic across all lanes including the shoulders?  Fine.  No need to send the BIB the dash cam video.  It's not a problem.   And driving  your car/truck/van on the sidewalk and parking it between 3 pm to 6 pm.  Recommended.  It keeps those pesky motorcyclists from driving there!

Thais disobey road laws because the chance of being caught and fined is low, this could be what is needed to change years of bad behaviour !

I live in Asia.  You live in Thailand.  And you accuse me of living in an "alternate reality".   If you wish to hold Thailand to a low standard and apologize for broken institutions, please continue to do so.  And please continue you picking small bits of my argument apart.  Eventually, you may start sounding credible. 

 

Actually, Taiwan has put cameras all over Taipei to do just what you say is impossible in Bangkok and that was in 2005.   Watched them do it.  Watched them pull the wires.    Today, wireless costs are very low and far more advanced.  Wires would not need to be pulled.
