Good value wedding venue in Bangkok

Hey all,  I haven't seen a thread about this for a good number of years, so I'm putting this out there again for a 2017 update.

I'm currently looking around for a venue and most hotels appear to be around 1000B per head and don't allow external catering (just as good, half the price).  Any personal ideas/suggestions of places you know that are around 500-600B per head or allow external catering?  I actually know several great catering companies, but none of the hotels I've found will allow it.

I've already googled a lot, and called over 20 hotels in Bangkok... need some insider info.  Unfortunately my Thai friends don't seem to be much help, all just recommending super expensive hotels.

Hotels make money from food and beverage sales as well as venue hire.

Nearly all hotels will allow you to bring your own alcohol, but they will have a corkage charge per bottle.

Food is a slightly different matter. If you really want to supply your own food via a catering company I suggest you go visit the hotel in person rather than discussing the matter on the phone.

You will probably find a hotel that will agree, however they will charge substantially more for the hire of the venue to make up for their loss of profit.

It will be swings and roundabouts.

Nice hotels get booked quite quickly, so they have to consider why they would want your booking which would make them less money than any other booking which would be a known quantity.

Try Nathong Restuarant in Huay Kwang

Its a large Thai restaurant but has many private rooms also for functions/weddings, its a very nice venue.

Not sure if they will allow outside catering (worth asking) but the thai food there is really good anyway.

I had my wedding reception there and the bill was about 25k for about 50 people if i remember rightly. Plus the huge bonus is you can take your own wine which can be a massive saving.

They have a variety of rooms/sizes so ask to see them all, some are better than others.

Skip the wedding. Why start off in debt. Better yet, save for the next one because statistically you will divorce anyway.

Register office to get married. No guests needed. Then point out the waste of XX,000 Baht on any form of ceremony/follow up frivolities.

Even where I come from, no one normal can afford a lavish wedding. I don't mean don't have the cash but there are better things to spend money on.

My, what an upbeat note; I wonder why you didn't just suggest they do it in the Nana parking lot, there would already be bridesmaids and flower girls.

Seriously though, you could have it in a national park; you can cater your own food and drink and  entrance fee may be all that is required.

I have been to plenty of Weddings in Bangkok which permit 'outside food'... these are usually the latest trendy noodle shop such as Trok Rong Moo Noodles which private hire for Weddings etc...  That said, these are most likely on top of what is provided by the hotel.

From what I gather (and it was from our wedding) the envelope money generally covers the whole cost of the Wedding.

Wine / Beer / Whisky etc can usually be brought in from outside - a negotiated Corkage will be charged.

Additional flower displays can be brought in from outside - again a charge is normal associated with this, we found that additional flowers were unnecessary.

And then of course, there are additional items such as 'Back Drop' (where you have your photo taken) and the name board on the stage etc...

Plus any additional charges for extending the rental of the venue for the after party, and then paying the staff overtime.

-----------

For our wedding: About 1000ppl we negotiated to Free Corkage, made an agreement with a local Bar to have a load of Whisky & Beer at Cost (and return what we didn't use - as it was most difficult to work out how much we needed!).

We bought Procecco, White & Red Wine from Ital Asia, with an agreement to return unused boxes (friends actually bought the extras off us instead).

There was no need for extra flowers or extra food from outside, the food provided was already excellent (cocktail party). We also hired a smaller room (at no extra cost) for the 'engagement part of the ceremony 2 hrs before the main evening event started.

We had a Band until about 11pm (I think).

We agreed that the venue could also be used for the after party by partitioning off the main ballroom unto 1/3rd of its original size, we agreed this room could be used until 1am (we were there until about 3am !!)... Private DJ from a bar we frequented provided his services for free.

We kept a handful of waiting staff on for the extra hours of the after party and paid them a pre-agreed over time rate.

Most of this was organized by my Wife and her close friend who is an event planner - I just sat by and enjoyed the ride.

The only real input I had was being quite firm that we were not getting up and putting rings on at 6:43am (or whatever lucky time the fortune teller gave my MiL to be), that and the date of the Wedding which had to be at a time my family could come over from the UK.

-----------

Thus: Anything is possible - its the Hotels Job to make a profit, its your job Op (if you are the one doing the organizing) to ensure your Wife has a wedding she's dreamt of at a price you can afford - but remember, most guests will leave some money in envelopes and place them in a box. Whenever my Wife and I go to a Wedding we usually leave between 1000 baht and 2000 baht per per person depending on how well we know the couple and how expensive we think the venue is (its about helping the couple cover costs) and most will do the same.

If all of that is too much, then a nice quite affair at a beach is tasteful (and IMO much nicer than the fanfare and opulence of a grand hotel wedding in Bangkok).

I have no idea of prices or policies but I was involved in a video production at a facility/studio called Benedict Studios that is spectacular.  it is a former Benedictine monastery with beautiful Moorish architecture and large, beautiful rooms.

and it does serve as an event space.  Kind of out of the way in Lad Phrow.

Worth checking out.

Thanks for all in the input, and the couple of great suggestions. The former monastery does look spectacular, however I'm sure the price is equally spectacular. I'll check it out.

Unfortunately we locked the date in December due to school holidays in several countries overlapping... however we didn't realise that the hotels don't negotiate on price during high season. Unless there are any other gems out there I haven't found yet, we may just be biting the bullet and praying all those envelopes bring in a good sum.

If by some chance you found rates at the monastery were doable, hotels in the Lad Phrow area such as the SC Park &Town in Town along with quite a few others are not as tied in to tourist season rates as downtown hotels and are perhaps more amenable to negotiation.  Kind of away from the action but then again, your guests will have the money they don't waste downtown to give to the happy couple.
