BANGKOK: -- Officials from the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation today (Aug 31) raided a large and well-known leather shop in Bang Lamphu shopping area and charged a shop operator of illegal possession of carcasses of protected animal species.

The raid by the department’s “Yiew Dong” (hawk eagle) special task force came after it received tipoff that the shop, Udom Agg, sells shoes, leather and handbags made of snake skins.

Under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act 1992, illegal possession of carcasses of protected animals is subject to four years in prison and 40,000 baht fine.

They needed a tip off? This store has branches everywhere and they all have crocodile shoes in the window!

It's not selling the crocodile leather that is the problem.... this comes from crocodile farms.. which are perfectly legal here.... those croc shoes and bags are not from wild animal poaching...... the problem is that his licence expired only.

Ah ok, thanks. I didn't open the full article and the summary paragraphs above made no mention of an expired license.

Who care wild animals. It's so stupid to find problems in this business ! I wish that humans become less stupid, this would be a great improvement, yes !

BANGKOK: -- Bags and shoes made of snake leather, collectively worth Bt1 million, were seized from a shop in Bangkok's Khao San Road on Thursday.

The National Parks Department’s Wild Hawk task force in charge of suppressing the online trade in protected wildlife identified the leather products at the shop as using protected species of reticulated python, Indian python and oriental rat snake.

The shop owner had a licence to sell wildlife products, but it had expired, so 346 items were confiscated as evidence for Bang Khen police to build a case for prosecution.

We don not want to live in a world without snakes. That´s for sure, but a couple of bags here and there will not make a differens.

I guess we have harder problem to look at and concentrate on in this country.
