How fast the final curtain can fall.
soi3eddie replied to swissie's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
And there is an issue for me. At the not so tender age of 55 I have just done my will for the 2nd time. I would rather have time to plan and ensure everything in order and in place for my loved ones and to be able to say goodbye for one last time than for it to be over in a sudden instant. I hear that pain releif is good these days anyway. -
OMG! Was that really 20 years ago? How things have changed and progressed. Even Thai authorities still find it difficult to answer email.

Sadly, this is part of the culture. Cannot be seen to challenge authority or elders. Healthy discussion would lead to better understanding and thinking. From what I've seen in Thailand over last 23 years, thinking is not encouraged. Just do as you're taught and don't buck the system. Free thinking and analysis is what is needed. Not blaming the teachers, rather the system and culture. The Thai government would do well to copy nearby countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong (well at least formely) when it comes to education.

Yes. The Burmese (Myanmar) are better at English than the Thais. So are the Cambodians and Vietnamese. Source not really needed, but added to appease any question: https://www.ef.com/wwen/epi/

Man, 25, fighting for life in Thailand hospital after horror crash
soi3eddie replied to anchadian's topic in Phuket News
Yes. Or limited to 125cc and must be properly licenced in home country for such and helmeted too. The insurers are looking to get out easily. Any sniff of narcotics (alcohol or otherwise), and claim rejected. -
Man, 25, fighting for life in Thailand hospital after horror crash
soi3eddie replied to anchadian's topic in Phuket News
Not for the rider. It's 3rd party personal coverage only in case of injury to others. The mandatory insurance does not cover property damage either. Insurance on rental is only the mandatory 3rd party, so will never cover injury to rider or 3rd party property and MUST be properly licenced with a Thai licence (and maybe International drivers permit and overseas licence of correct category). For this reason, I have always had 1st class insurance on my bike, however payout for own medical is still limited to 50,000 Baht. Therefore, I always ensure that my medical insurance covers riding motorcycles for which I'm licenced. -
Yes, an arrival card is required. I beleive it can be done just before going through immigration but no more than 3 days in advance. We went a few months ago and it was a breeze - they use electronic gates to enter/exit. Just place passport on scanner and look at the camera (may have to do fingerprints but can't remember). Takes no more than 10 seconds. They then send an email welcoming you to Singapore with your permitted length of stay and a link in case you need to extend stay. Good system. https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/sg-arrival-card

Entering Thailand with a new and old passport
soi3eddie replied to Sjoerd's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Yes, that's exactly how it works. Once entered, then go to your immigration office and they will transfer the visa/extension and re-entry permit. Should be no charge but you never know with some offices. -
An update and quoting my own comment above. Today, my GF received her Cambodian passport by EMS with 6 month UK visit visa (multiple entry). She lodged the biometric data at VFS, Trendy, Bangkok on 11th April and the visa was issued on 4th May (reviewed by British High commission New Delhi who deal with Asian applications). I was her sponsor and did the application for her. Uploaded 38 PDF files of supporting evidence. This included a covering letter from me outlining our history and intensions etc. Also, pictures together over the last 3 years both in Thailand and Cambodia. A copy of her Thai Non-O visa too. She's not working, so bank statements of hers and mine showing support. Child's school enrolment, her apartment rental contract. Translated from Thai to English where needed. Copy of my passport and financials too. Copy of our LINE correspondence (350 pages of text). Neither of us received any interview call. Needless to say, we are very happy and it is always possible to do it yourself. Now, if only flights were less expensive!

No way is Thai inflation at 2.7%. Food and fuel are always increasing. Whether in the local market, at one of the big "super"-markets, street stalls or local wet markets prices are up, up and up . Even boat noodles have risen in price well beyond 2.7%. Does any normal person (Thai or foreigner) really beleive this figure? As a comparison, inflation in Laos, a next door neighbour is over 40%. Maybe both are skewed a bit, as different economies, but there is no way that Thailand is at 2.7%. Let's hope that the upcoming election results will be more accurate and honest! Going through customs with vitamins/supplements/powders?

Don't worry. So long as they are legal, labelled and in quantities obviously for personal use (not resale), you'll be fine. Enjoy the flight! And the fight! -
Thinking of a 2nd or 3rd marriage? Think again
soi3eddie replied to bignok's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
A very good older friend of mine, now passed, always used to joke that he was "married 3 times and each time cost him a house". He died aged 67 in a single rented room in a west london property. Married once was plenty enough for me despite being with a lovely lady now for last 3 years. -

Thanks. Quite a change, however not easy and not always possible. Yet another hurdle to gain a British passport. Good luck to the OP! From the updated guidance in 2019: Foreign nationals who apply to become British citizens may be registered or naturalised in their married name. However, if a new citizen wants a British passport in their married name they must change the name on their other passport(s), travel documents and national identity card(s) to reflect their married name before submitting their application. Exceptions to this approach are set out in Exceptions to guidance.

Assuming, by "they" you mean British authorities. That seems crazy. Your partner comes to the UK in maiden name, you get married and she assumes your last name in marriage (from marriage certificate). After the required period, she applies for British citizenship but they won't allow that unless her Thai passport has been changed to her married name? I'm sure you must be correct. Do you have a link to this as I know someone in the UK whose Thai wife is just about to apply for UK citizenship?

That, unfortunately, appears correct from the .GOV.UK website. I got my affirmation of address in November 2022 for renewal of car driving licence. I own my own condo, have a yellow book/Pink ID card and a non-o retirement extension for last 4 years. My M/C licence needs renewal next year. As I never spend 90 consecutive days in Thailand, and don't do 90 day reports, is it possible to get residence certificate from immigration?
