  1. The local bookshop like NaiIn and the likes might be dead and even Newspaper and Magazine racks are sitting empty, but the annual book fair at big convention halls see plenty of Thais hauling off books for their enjoyment, these Thais are probably the minority, and the activities of middle class and up, with decent Thai books costing 2-300 baht, it's definitely not for the working class but taking books on commute to read in the train/bus or even to enjoy in cafes or lunch break are definitely strange to Thais
  2. The cost of the tool to splice together broken cable will be too prohibitive, like 50-100,000 baht machine, if it's indoor cable (typically yellow) between the box on the wall and the router, maybe you can get the patch cord to replace it
  3. The staff in backwater branch probably had seen the memo about ticking the box on the forms about US persons, if there are additional forms to fill out that she don't know how to get and having never handled a Farang customer, decided that saying no would save her a load of trouble
  4. you're not obliged to stand for that,
  5. What shop is even in there anymore, even the venerable A&W that has been there since the 90s has moved out edit - didn't see this was CM, not Bangkok, please delete
  6. The previous generations were Daewoo, this 'last run' that was launched as GM pulled out of Thailand was Chinese based
  7. That's the typical entrance, there's parking for joggers but I've heard the department's closed to outsiders since COVID, not sure if it has reopened yet, if not you can drive around and on the other side of the reservoir which is a public road there's area with street vendors where you can park and enjoy the scenery, it's not on the reservoir's edge but it's just as nice
  8. there are companies that don't offer these 'cash payout' bet against covid type insurance, so there are actuaries that did their job and/or executives that listened to them. until before Delta hit, these companies are making easy money on these insurance where they promise to pay a lump sum upon diagnosis of covid and that's it, nothing to do with actual care received.
  9. only song that cause Thais to immobilize in their track is the national anthem and royal anthem, national anthem is only played at 8am and 6pm and never in malls, Royal anthem is played on the arrival and departure of royals on formal occasion, unless somebody is cutting ribbons to open a shop in big c, which you'd be told by police to stop where you are, maybe there's a mix up in the playlist?
  10. For the price around 300K you can get decent eco-car which at least survivable in a crash whereas the wuling would be quite deadly, The Fomm's hand throttle is a deal breaker
  11. Look closely next time you fill up with 'Premium' to see the B7 either on the pump handle or sign on the price
  12. If he had access to empty passbooks and letterheads and a way to print arbitrary amount on them, he could have kept a low profile and offer annual 800,000 seasoned in the banks in Pattaya and make a killing
  13. if he has passed the test and was given a certificate, he can book his own appointment to get photographed and card made at any land transport office, they will show available dates
  14. Legal minimum is 13 days paid holidays, this is usually the traditional days like New Years, Buddhist days and Royal Birthdays, they can be 'observed' on other days if you are already having a day off on that day or be paid overtimes if you are working on the days, the employer should have a notice out saying which days count as the company's official holidays, most decent employer will observe more than the 13 mimimum employee that's been working for 1 year are also entitled to minimum 6 days of paid leave, typically more leave are given for longer tenure so the minimum paid leave for Thailand is 13+6 days
  15. The one in Nana is closed for months now, Burger King next door is open Anyone been to Soi 22 recently?
  16. Has anyone seen a functioning Carl's Jr. in Bangkok or even Pattaya? Since COVID the ones I saw from Nana to Asok are all 'temporarily closed' I know a few years back there had been issues with beef supply and were without beef for months
  17. cheaper ways to do it is to get a blank keyboard like das keyboard or blank keycaps and stick the Thai keys sticker that's widely available to stick on English only keyboard on them
  18. the only problem so far with going cardless and QR only is that one start to rely on the cardless withdrawal using QR at the ATMs means you're locked in to your own bank's ATM they'll probably standardize on QR withdrawal at the ATM soon enough
  19. they seem to be shorter compared to the kids of late 80s-90s when there was a deliberate drive to get them to drink milk and better nutrition, which is strange considering the availability of milk and foods now
  20. last time I saw a Thai only keyboard is on a typewriter, and onscreen keyboard, maybe you can get custom keycap made
  21. upper class has better way to spend their time and/or have people to sort out their visas so they don't need to find out by getting down and dirty with the hoi poloi
  22. K-Web card is just another card number linked to your regular card/account and takes cash straight out K-Web card's advantage are that it appears as a credit card to merchant, in case where they don't accept debit cards, plus they have more robust chargeback procedure in place in case of fraud or overcharge/nondelivery by the merchant, for a normal debit card, you usually can't dispute or chargeback, or normally you tell the bank, and they say they'll have a look, and does nothing in 2-4 weeks. I've personally used K-Web card's dispute mechanism and they are pretty good and got results. and in case of persistent subscription that can't be cancelled, you can request a new card no. It is geared towards people who can't get real credit cards yet like youths or people without credits but want to buy things online 5-10 years ago, most Thai debit cards can't be used online internationally without jumping through hoops or at all
  23. Always had Panasonic in our house, works well form when they were previously known as 'National' but in our later build condos, we had Btcino, after about 15 years, the plastic crisp up and break, resulting in sparks and shorts at the switches, had to replace the whole condos worth of switches and sockets to Panasonic now
  24. but this model is essentially an MG, even MG dealers has trouble getting parts from china to repair their own MGs in reasonable time, wonder how much of GM's supply chain is left, maybe the old dealers just got dumped the stock in spare parts, won't be much help for this Captiva model though
