It is from the face scan requirement. Before foreigners could be exempted from it. They no longer allow that exemption. The banks don't have it set up to retain the face scan information for foreigners. You need a Thai ID for it to be kept in their system. I went into my local branch, SCB, and asked about it. They are the ones that told me the above. However they did say if I wanted to do a larger transaction I could go to the branch and they could do a face scan but it is only good for that single transaction. Say for example you want to make a payment or send money to someone for 75K. You can do 2 separate transactions that equal the total, like 50K and then 25K, up to the 200K daily limit.

For many families it is their only transportation.
