  1. Locally, if a vendor asked me to move so he can set up, I would move since I know he paid for the spot (they pay more for outside of schools, hospitals etc.). Some places that look like they may get a lot of loading and unloading traffic is best to avoid, you may get locked in by a delivery truck. I will park almost anywhere if I know it will be a short stop. Anything longer we will usually ask if there is some doubt. Rarely told not to do so with reason. A bar? I would want to know the reason. Short story Back in the States this time around, I would go to this coffee shop in the morning and study my Thai and Spanish. I usually wore headphones. There was a little table for two away from the main area that I could get since I came in so early. One day a guy came in and asked if he could sit in the other chair. I said "sure, go ahead". A few days later the same guy comes in asks again. Again I said "sure". Then one day, he came in and asked, but I told him "no" that I had a friend that was coming in shortly. He stomped off saying "I don't think you can reserve seats here!". The next day, he comes in and sits but doesn't ask. The same the next day. The third day, I unplugged my headset and turned the volume up. He got up and told me I was very annoying and left.
  2. I find it funny that it is the people who complain about how foreigners are changing the way "its always been" in their own country are the same ones that that want the Thais to change to suit themselves.
  3. I am sure everyone here has read "our side" already. I am certainly not pro Russian. I don't believe Russia had the right to invade even if they didn't like the ways things were going. As for the Russians here, they are just people who came here to have a good time, Let them be.
  4. I am against all wars. But I do think people should see both sides of the picture. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/neo-nazis-far-right-ukraine/
  5. I wasn't making a judgement call. If I was in the same boat I might do the same. We all seem to rationalize our actions when it comes to personal gain. I'm from the US so I just wish you would keep it down as to not give my country any bad ideas.
  6. I hear about this almost every week. My Brit friend has been here 20 years. Wants to go back for the required 6 months to get a raise and then return. Others keep a address in England and "hide out" here.
  7. Sold everything. I didn't have a house anymore, lost it in a flood, didn't have flood insurance since I was not in a flood area. (long story). I had a construction company and a cabinet shop. Sold all the tools-- I really miss them. I have a friend here who keeps his house, makes good money off it renting as a vacation rental. When he wants to return for vacation, he just calls the manager and puts the rental on hold.
  8. That is what I do, both riding and walking. I do not live in a city. It puts shivers up my spine when I see Thais walking with their backs to the traffic with their small children on the outside.
  9. When I came you were required to put the Morchana app on your phone. The app sent a notification of when to get tested and a link to report the results. The link was user specific as it would only take my info. I tried to input my wife's and it would not work, she had a different link. So they know if you have reported or not. The hotel also "asked" that we inform them of the results. The powers that be may not be going after those that skip out or they may be waiting for you when you leave. You can hold a gun to your head, it may not be loaded. You are free to pull the trigger, your choice.
  10. A friend of mine 35, died last year. He was feeling a little poorly and someone noticed that the whites of his eyes looked a bit yellow. Went to the doc for some tests. When the tests came in he was told he had 10 days to a month to live. Liver cancer. He died bravely. I still can't imagine what it must be like to know for sure you only have days left. Knowing you won't have to turn another calendar page. What to do with those last days. Most of us will "live forever" until we die. Count your blessings.
  11. If its a one off holiday or wedding, let it go. If not buy a large speaker and play Tiny Tim"s "Tiptoe though the Tulips" loudly the whole following morning.
  12. Not for me, it keeps me awake, but my friends swear by it. I have kind of a weird system anyway. I used to have a cup of coffee and a couple of cookies before going to bed and I would sleep like a baby. Only in the last year or two have I been having some problems sleeping. I find it is best not to fight it, get up, find something to do (NO tv or internet) for 15 minutes and then back to bed. I also find just going out an laying on the sofa will put me out. Melatonin sometimes works for me but mostly for jet lag.
  13. Back in the 60's a magazine posted photos of signs that GI's took in Japan. There were many funny ones, but I can only remember two. At a hotel "Please leave your values at the front desk before going to your room" At a bar "Ladies, Please refrain from having children in the Bar"
  14. You might try http://radio.garden/listen/bbc/WnxO8vcp
  15. Don't agree to anything, don't sign anything. Put the ball in the companies court. If laid off, had wages reduced, or fired, find out what you can do legally about it. Let the company have to do the explaining.
  16. Same with out of state students. Many state parks do the same. Not really a foreigners tax.
  17. OK we agree that Skype is the way to go. But I have the option to have them call back back instead of sitting on call waiting. I am only stating the advantage of having static number.
  18. My friends can call me for free since its a local number for them. Also many banks (in the US) won't take international numbers in their online security setup. And yes it does depend on how much you use it.
  19. That is the advantage of getting the Skype number. Call and receive on you cell phone. When you call they see the number you have in your home country and they can call you back to the same. The calls are clearer than the local calls here in Thailand. 35 USD. Since I have never tried, I don't know if it works over data.
