CHIANG RAI: -- A Malaysian man was arrested in Chiang Rai after he snatched a New Zealand woman’s handbag.

Asri Bin Awng was captured by Pol Senior Sgt Maj Kittidej Khothawee, a traffic policeman of Mueang Chiang Rai’s police station, who was directing traffic at the Mae Fah Luang airport intersection.

Kittijdej saw the woman chasing the Malaysian man who was running from a passenger bus that was slowing down at the intersection. The Malaysian was seen throwing away a bag.

When the policeman caught up with the Malaysian and managed to overpower him, he found a Bt1,000 note in his back pocket.

The woman, identified as Campbell Madeline, suffered bruises on her arms and knees when she fell during the chase.

The Malaysian told police that he came to Thailand to look for his wife but failed to find her and ran out of cash.

He said he was taking the Mae Sai bus to Bangkok and noticed the woman was carrying an expensive bag, so he decided to snatch it when the bus was slowing down at the intersection.

Yes, long hair or short, no matter which genitalia we have from my home country, equality runs across all lines of mindsets. Girls fight with boys in the school yards as children, swear like them and drink like them as adults. There are few things the ladies of that small country shy from.

Lucky she chased the thief because many Thai Police would have little interest in assisting in non-revenue gathering activities. Commendations should go to the officer that assisted the arresting party.

Respect to the NZ woman but if the perp had been carrying a knife things could have ended very differently. Is it really worth risking your life for things that can be easily replaced? I know the more macho TV posters will say you must always stand up for yourself but "live to fight another day" has always seemed a smart attitude to me.

Is it now considered macho to stand up for ones well being, possessions and freedoms.  That must have happened while I wasn't looking.  Glad to see others haven't been told yet either.  Good on her!

In the policeman's pocket. Probably a traffic 'fine'......
