I have a New Zealand passport and want to take my thai partner to USA(thai passport) for 6 months we currently have residency in Australia. And are going to move after a 2 year break to New Zealand. I fully support my wife financially.

your thoughts please and suggestions very much appreciated. I.e. Where to apply here Australia or New Zealand.

Thai citizen and passport holder would normally need to file any US visa application in Bangkok. However, if she has Australian residency, it should be possible to do it there and get a 10 year visa.

A few years ago, I filed for a US visa at their embassy in Bangkok with the foreigners house registration (yellow book) accepted as provenance of my current Thai domicile. That qualified me to apply here and not in London as I am a Brit on a UK passport. I am married to a local as well although that wasn't necessarily any sort of enabler my visa application here but possibly a long-term visa (or extension thereof) is considered adequate along with Thai address proof?

Normally?  I think that is only sort of true because most would be applying from here, but there is no 'need' to apply in Bangkok.

I have a friend who took his wife to the US Embassy in Laos to apply for her tourist visa.  No problem, and approved quicker than if she had applied here.

"Partner," not married, right?

How long have you been together?

Partner also has residency in Australia?

What is your visa status here in Thailand?

Why six months?  Longish time for a tourist visit.

They way it often works is that the interviewing consular officer will look at you and your status, your ties to your partner, figuring that if you are going to depart the U.S. after your permitted period of stay, the partner will exit with you.

Does your Thai partner have permanent residence in Aus?  If so you should be Ok to apply at US Embassy in Aust.  If she is temporary residence then she will probably not be OK, and it it is close it would be best to wait til it is approved. Either way - contact the US Embassy and ask them directly.
