Residents prepare for floods as Phimai Dam releases overflow

People living along the Mun River in Nakhon Ratchasima are moving their belongings to higher ground after a flood warning.

Irrigation officials announced on Sunday that they would discharge more water from the now-overwhelmed Phimai Dam.

“There was huge rainfall in Nakhon Ratchasima during the past few days. So, we will have to fully open all water gates of the dam to release water,” an official said.

He added that the dam should contain no more than 2,110,000 cubic metres of water but now had 2,113,051 cubic metres in store.

“Let’s hope that no more rain is coming over the next few days. Otherwise, the situation will be worrying,” Paitoon Yangraak, a chief of the Phimai irrigation project, said.

What parts of Nakon Ratchasima will be flooded in the dams in Phi Mai opens?

and another tropical depression (23W), soon to be Tropical Storm, on the way.

A legitimate question.

The report in the other English newspaper (Bangkok Post) is much more detailed.

B.P. does not allow links in Thaivisa.

Along the moon river bank...

Removed a post containing a link to Bangkok Post.

Bangkok Post does not allow Thaivisa to use it's articles in any form.

That is NOT a technical issue (if you misunderstood this).

I see now (from a 2009 announcement). Well that's down right rude of them.

Look out Ubon town too! And other lower reaches of the Mun between Korat and Khong Jiam in Ubon Province, where the river enters the Mekong

The river is already at flood levels in the town with a few hundred people camping out now on higher ground since late July (a longer camp-out than I can remember in my 10 years in this neck of the woods). Water managers up-river would presumably have let out more water prior to the current inundations had it not been for the constant high levels the river has maintained downstream throughout the last 2½ months

Dams opening plus the depression that is passing over the northern provinces in Isaan (eg Khon Kaen and Sakhon Nakhon, which are big sources of water to pass by us on their way to Cambodia and the Mekong delta) means a very uncomfortable time ahead for the lower reaches of the town I would imagine.

Pictures below of north bank (Ubon town) and south bank (already overflowed into lower reaches of Warin) in late August. Taken from the main bridge on Ubon Hash House Harriers run 107. Picture by Ubon harriette 'BJ Surprise'. The river has remained at these high levels despite a relatively dry second half of September, due to the fact the Mun drains half of Isaan and its always raining somewhere!
