Police said the accident, which happened at 5:30am on the Buri Ram-Nang Rong road in Ban Khok Mai Daeng village in Tambon Ban Bua in Muang district, caused both vehicles to catch fire. Ten fire engines were deployed to control the blaze in the oil tanker, which flipped and fell into the side of the road. The oil tanker driver, Adu Srinaowarat, 45, was slightly injured and managed to escape before the fire took hold. The pickup truck driver, Chalerm Phanasan, 36, died at the scene and a woman, who was severely burnt, died in hospital. A three-year-old boy was also severely injured by the fire. Five other passengers were injured in the crash but not burnt, police said. jackdd
Is it legal in Thailand to drive with 8 people in a pickup, or to have people on the cargo area of a pickup truck? I did never see police stop one of these pickups

I'm somewhat puzzled. I drove past this accident scene at 9:00 am and there was no sign of there having been a fire in, or around, the tanker. There was 2 fire engines on site but no hoses deployed. The tanker hadn't flipped. Even the picture in the article shows it sitting upright. I think a little sensationalism in the story.

Smell of petrol and sand being laid on the road. Looked like the tanker had swereved and gone in the ditch. No sign even of a burnt pick up. RichardColeman
I think I'll wait until I see the statement from the homeless man before commenting - if they can find him ! or if he existed.
