One dead, nine hurt as pipe bursts at water "10 billion baht" filtration plant in Nakorn Pathom

One man was pronounced dead and nine were injured after a pipe burst at a public waterworks filtration plant flooding an underground area to a depth of four meters.

Rescuers and frogmen managed to get the nine workers to safety but the one victim was still trapped under a pipe by some stairs deep under the water.

He could not be retrieved by press time.

A short circuit has been initially blamed for allowing water to gush in and damage a pipe that burst.

Bang Len district chief Yuthana Phothiwihok and his team were providing assistance at the scene.

Thai Rath revealed that the giant plant had been built just 12 years ago at a cost of 10 billion baht.

Yuthana said that water supply in Nakorn Chaisri district would be affected but not severely.

The injured were taken to Luang Phor Pern Hospital following the accident at the plant in Bang Rakam sub-district.

Can't understand the point of the headline. What does it matter how much it cost to build the plant? A man's life is gone and many are injured.

Possibly they'r suggesting that for that amount of money all the equipment and installation should've been to a high specification and, as such, they wouldn't have expected a pipe to burst.

If the plant has been in operation for 12 years, anything could have happened. Doesn't matter how high the material specification, everything corrodes even Incalloy or Hastalloy. The question comes, how well was the pipework maintained? If it was cathodically protected with sacrificial anodes (assuming it's not an impressed current system) and they were replaced regularly with decent corrosion monitoring, and there's regular plant shut down and replacement schedules, there should be no problems.

 

But, maintenance is something that nobody sees as being of benefit, after all, TIT. So incidents like this should be expected.

Once a month with an old fashioned DM2.

All that seems to have gone now not just only here. You don't even need to get anyone in from an ndt co', you then can see what happening to the pipewall.

Don't even need a laptop, just a book and a pen.
