Nineteen provinces are struggling with flooding and 113,501 families have been affected, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said on Friday amid a litany of grim statistics.

They include 10 deaths.

Department director-general Chayapol Thitisak reported that, from October 10 until Thursday, 78 districts in 23 provinces had been flooded, affecting 125,116 households – an estimated 324,962 people.

Chayapol was quoted by the National News Bureau as saying 67 districts in 19 provinces were currently dealing with floodwaters, with 113,497 households or 296,380 people affected, including 20 families that had been driven from their homes.

The 19 provinces are Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Sing Buri, Lop Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Chai Nat, Suphan Buri, Nong Bua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Roi Et and Ubon Ratchathani.

Chayapol said his department was working with provincial authorities and other related agencies to provide aid and drain off floodwater.

People in need or in danger can call the hotline 1784 at any time.

In Nonthaburi, meanwhile, the possibility of flooding has prompted the municipality of Nakhon Nonthaburi to cancel its annual Loy Krathong festivities and traditional boat races, VoiceTV reported on Thursday.

The popular event usually held at Nonthaburi Pier was cancelled amid fears the Chao Phraya River would rise further, the municipality’s Facebook page advised on Wednesday.

The pier is already awash with downstream current and the seasonal inflow of seawater, and pumps have been installed in preparation for worse.

Junta mismanagement.

Oh, I forgot, it is only mismanagement when a Shinawatra elected government presides over such a debacle.

No its only mismanagement when your minister does not release water from the dams, to save the rice and only releases it at the worst possible moment when the high tides are there. That is what happened during YL.

The junta who certainly has their faults has been releasing water from the dams now for months to make sure they did not have to release it at the worst possible time. So far they have done a good job (believe one dam did burst somewhere in the north east). But its a far cry from holding all the water in the dams to help the farmers and then at the high of the floods add more.

Its impossible to prevent flooding but you can try to make the impact less.

flood control should be Thailand's number one priority.

before all else.

if there was ever a need for a public works program, this is it.

Who cares? The majority of flooding is in the NE and NW, er, Red Shirt provinces. Nobody in govt, especially this shambles, cares about it because it aint BKK. Rice farms flooded, piss poor villages flooded  - pah! Industrial and downtown BKK - all hands on deck!!

More lies. YL was sworn in middle August 2011 and the floods hit Bangkok middle September, how can they have released the water from the dams? To prevent a floods water must be released in March. In March 2011 the Democrats was the government. Where is your link to prove that they released water when there was a high tide. The high tide occured when the flood reached BKK. The flood of 2011 did not start in September it started in June (before the election) when areas in Singburi flooded. Compared these fatcs to the fact that the junta has been in control for the whole rainfall season. You are either an total id... or dont like the truth, but it is clear that you dont know what you are talking about.. But for those who like the truth it is publicised and available to anyone seeking it. Where YL failed was in managing the communication to the people when the floods hit, lets see how the junta handle the situation. By the way mr. I.... I am not a YL supporter but I hate lies and liars.
