Loy Krathong--what/when are the restrictions on lanterns?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what restrictions on floating lanterns will be in place this year?  Last year they were only allowed on one day, will it be the same this year?  If so, does anyone know the day?

each area varies. 2 years ago a plane came out of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, and engine sucked in a lantern. no people hurt, engine destroyed.in Chiang Mai, we call them balloons, restrictions are to the Ping River area, but rules will be broken in Thailand.  A policeman says no, listen, stop, don't argue.

Please provide a news link I don’t think any engine was destroyed. I recall one incident where a lantern debris got pulled out of some air conditioning or engline inlet but no serious damage

The powerplants on planes are designed to survive hailstone encounters and large birds. Small birds are often sucked in with no effect.

The idea that there is any danger that would actually take down an aircraft is just sensationalism. I think wildfires/and house fires are a greater danger.

Living in a wooden house as I do, these aerial fireballs are an annual cause for concern

By the time they get to you, their fuel is exhausted. Simple physics - hot air rises, cold air sinks.

According to one article (via CityLife):

It also appears there will be TWO nights when Lanterns can be released – 3rd and 4th November – because flights are cancelled from 9pm onwards both nights – but double check!!!!

Given they're cancelling flights from 9PM onwards, probably a good idea to not float the lanterns until after 9.

I have seen them caught burning in the tangled nest of black cables seen on most streets line, sudden "boom" then a power outage.

I've just been advised that a flight to Chiang Mai is leaving 2 hours earlier than planned, to avoid the lanterns.

Seems to me there are two different sizes; those in Chiang Mai are HUGH, those in Pattaya are about the size of a grocery store paper bag.

hello, do you know where to buy them online in Thailand ? Thanks.

I know where to get in Chiang Mai. Nong Hoi , Road 106 near Holiday Inn near the bridge. Buying online now, 4 days before Loy Kratong 11/3/2017, you will get on 11/11/2017. You can get 50 Large for 900 to 1000 Baht. Can sell for 50 baht each. I sold 2 times at The Iron Bridge.

Sorry I won't be there to watch I love the lantern festival. It's beautiful, peaceful, something I'll never forget  no matter where I'm living.   So naturally the powers that be want to end it based on nonsense that jet engines might  be damaged.

The festival Songkran on the other hand  harms 1000's each year; motorcyclists are bombarded with high powered water cannons and even ice cubes causing a wide variety of accidents; some serious. Yet no one talks of banning it. The event  it is allowed to proceed unabated.

Go figure!

Three years for floating lanterns at unapproved times from unapproved places.  The article focuses on Bangkok, it doesn't mention Chiang Mai.
Last night in Chiamg Mai sae biggest Loi Khratong crowds in years. Lanterns float2d after 7pm. There was a fireworks display by the Ping river at 9pm. People were using there own fireworks. Farangs bought beer from small riverside restautants and walked way drinking. I even saw a Thai man vaping openly. No police arrests, has the happiness of the people (sanity) returned?

MaeJo event is free every year, 1,000s of people and Khom Loys.

Of course as a Noob, you only know of the tourist scam event (1 week later) which barely gets a couple of hundred marks.

Some people on this  forum just aren't worth interacting with. Welcome to my 'ignore' list.

Very well then l'd rather not have any "interracting" consisting of calling people names and mischaracterizing posts. A negative social phenomena associated with personality disorder and against the forum rules!

Agreed; you were politely stating your views.  Correct or incorrect, if that's a ground for blocking someone *and then telling someone you're blocking them* (which contrary to popular belief is not required to complete the process) then that's indeed entering into areas of psychological interest.

I tell them because I hope they block me in return.

It's so much easier on facebook where blocking a person essentially means you cease to exist for each other.
