Professional eye exam needed...new prescription..?

Recommended Posts

Hi...

My partner needs new glasses and I’d say a different prescription..

These spectacle shops don’t look like they would be professionally trained to do a proper eye exam for new glasses...

do you think they are..?

Can you recommend a good place for a proper exam...?

You are right to be  cautious on some of these shops.   Some are awful. Try the Vision centre on Ratvithi road, thats the one I and a good many foreigners use.  From Moon Muang Road it is probably 100m up and on the right, just before the Irish UN pub.

The Tokyo Optics store at Airport Plaza has impressed me.  The most thorough examination for both glasses and contact lenses I've had outside the UK.

Thanks for the tip...do you pay individually  for the exam or do they expect  you to purchase the eyewear there

They did quite well for me too, better results than the most popular place.

Tokyo Optics are the same as most places: the exam is free if you buy from them but if you just want the prescription they make a charge.  Needed that for ordering contact lenses online from the US some years ago and I seem to remember that it was 350 baht, but as I said, a competent and thorough exam (at the Airport Plaza branch).

note: the Tokyo Optics comments above are about the Airport Plaza branch and do not apply to other branches which may be good or .....

eye exam and prescription at rutnin eye hospital,

then order online thru zenni optical.

Rutnin Eye Hospital is the best in Thailand, no doubt. I was very impressed there. But in C.M. Vision Center (or others as mentioned above) are fine - unless you happen to be in Bangkok.

Vision Center is always recommended but also expensive. There is a new large shop - franchise - in Central Festival called "OWNDAYS". A Japanese franchise. Very thorough testing and lenses made while you wait, 20 min, unless uncommon or complicated. Basic lenses, transition and progressive. They will sell you frames or re-lense your old frames. Terrific warranty and damage replacement policy. You can get 3 or more glasses for the price of one at Vision Center. Worth checking out.  https://www.owndays.com/th/en/

The Vision shop (forget the name) messed up my eye exam and the glasses were wrong.  I went to Bangkok hospital and got a prescription 1000 baht and took it back to the shop who remade my prescription.  Didn't like the fit of the glasses so ordered on line from Zenni.  First time.  I messed up the fitting because I didn't read the description well enough.  Next time I'll do better.  Zenni label washed off because of rain and just lucky the Post office knew me.

Vision centre, have done me twice in last 10 years.

Well Satisfied.

My experience also ,3 times in 11 years. This is not a franchise ,its run by the  professional owner whose equipment is the best I have ever experienced.

My last visit he suggested that I could use the same frames to save money and he scanned them and just supplied new progressive lenses. No hard sell, perfect vision..

He has never charged me for an examination and I think this is maybe a mistake as some cheap charlies get the eye check and prescription and then order online.

I had once gone to Airport Plaza for new glasses ,my eyes were tested and on receipt of the finished product they were so far out I couldnt see,no offer of compensation ot apology it was deemed my mistake.

I simply left them on the counter and walked out then. I was recommeded to Vision Centre by a friend and have subsequently recommended the same place to friends .never had any feed back of mal practice

Nah - since he refuses to give you the prescription even IF you buy lenses from him.  My experience.

That might be because there are way less than a hundred licensed optometrists in Thailand and most of those are located in hospitals. So when you go to the store that sells new glasses and lenses and get your eyes checked, you're almost certainly not having what westerners would know to be a proper eye exam. I think the best way to go is to get an eye exam at a hospital from an optometrist or ophthalmic surgeon, get a prescription from them and take that to the shop of your choice.

Well if you buy the lenses from him and they are to your satisfaction why would you want the prescription ?

To buy another pair in the future from a different location.

To confirm that the perscription and the actual lenses are the same.

Prescriptions obviously change after time goes by so you would  obviously/maybe need a new prescription anyway and when you received your new glasses the vision was as you had hoped the prescription readings were obviously right..but up to you

Thats why so many people go to Vision Centre he is a licensed optometrist. In fact 2 years back I got a prescription from RAM and went to him to make the glasses and he wanted to check their prescription and it was way out.Not bashing RAM maybe it was just a genuine mistake  or clerical error.

RAM did pick up that my cataracts were in intermediate stage and Vision Centre recommended Dr Winai who has operated on both eyes at Siriphat Hospital  in the last month or so.Delighted in his professionalism too

I don't know if he is or isn't but I'm going to guess that he isn't board certified in Thailand, I'm due down there in a week or so so I'll find out.
