Police and public health officials raided a Chiang Mai clinic yesterday and found a nurse doing a doctors job.

In fact there were no doctors at all on the premises at the PM Clinic on the Super Highway between Chiang Mai and Lampang.

The raiding party found Nitiyaporn Tuan, the 32 year old owner, doing laser surgery on a man. The patient was hoping to look younger and get whiter skin.

The raiders called an immediate halt and Nitayaporn had to admit that she had no qualifications to do surgery. She was just a nurse.

When asked to explain where the doctors were she had to point out that there weren't any there.

Also there were no licenses or proper documentation to run such a business.

She faces several years in jail and fines up to 50,000 baht.

The authorities said they would continue to crack down on such businesses operating illegally in the city describing them as a danger to public health.

Quite often an old experienced nurse can do a doctors job much better than an young inexperienced doctor

Perhaps, but that has no relevance here. Read what the procedure was. This was invasive  cosmetic transformation. The dermatologists  who undertake this activity are trained to understand  the impact of the procedure and what they can and cannot do.. The nurse here was neither trained nor qualified for the  activity.

A few weeks ago I talked to a 21 year old girl who worked in a well known beauty clinic in Bangkok. She told me that she was only an assistant as she had no qualifications after leaving school at 16.

Anyway, she went on to say that the owner (the doctor) really liked her and that he had taught her to do some of the surgical operations and that nowadays she often performed surgery without him being in the room.

Needless to say I was shocked.

A poster here wrote that this was probably the tip of the iceberg, and I think he is probably right.

How foolish could people become.. Westerners want their skin tanned and Asians want pale skin.. I beieve this is all the vicious game played by the brands selling cosmetics.. all the adverts on TV and in the media created and continue to create a psychological impact on the young minds that being dark or black is unacceptable, means lack of opportunities, etc etc.. somehow they portray as if it is a sin to be born with dark skin.. I believe this has been deeply ingrained into the young minds all over the world... there should be a ban on all those MNC brands that sell cosmetics. That too in Thailand there are more dangerous Chinese products with no certification and check.. I wonder how many of those two inch thick skinned girls in the so popular cosmetic clinics across Thailand are actually trained nurses at least..

One of my neighbours had their eye bags done in the front room of thier home. The person who did it was someone who worked at a beauty clinic during the day and did these jobs after work for extra cash and much cheaper than the clinic. It all worked out fine. The person was not a doctor or surgeon just someone who had been shown how to do it.

There are thousand of such clinics all over Thailand. Full in BKK and Pattaya and in Phuket. Wonder actually how many can they bring in account for.
